Woo-hoo, I am now in possession of a newly rebored barrel and a shiny new +.50 mm piston/rings[1] and all neccesary gaskets. Last week a couple of the lads at work helped me with stripping it down and diagnosing the problem, it had been badly seized at some point leaving great big scuffs down the piston and barrel. That would explain why it smoked like an early morning meeting of ASLEF dignitaries, had less pulling power than Whinging Courier in Chinawhite's and knocked like Katie Price's headboard. Surprisingly, the well known camshaft/rocker wear problem these engines suffer from hasn't reared its ugly head. At some point this week me and some more of the lads will be plonking it all back together ready for me to run in, in the vain hope it'll get to top out at more than its current 65mph. I know, I know, it's only a 26 year old SR250, but it's fun...now it doesn't look like some mock chopper abomination. Next job is to find the brakes - they're in there somewhere, I can hear faint rubbing noises when I use the lever and pedal. [1] I would have got a +.25mm piston kit, had any been available from Yamaha. -- Lozzo Triumph Daytona 955i SE Suzuki SV650 K3 Honda CBR600 F-W Suzuki GSX-R750L Yamaha SR250 SpazzTrakka
My '82 SR250 rattles along the A14 comfortably at 70 with an indicated 80 top speed, but I am constantly praying to anyone listening that nothing breaks and that I don't have to stop suddenly. Bill
Bill says... You own an SR250, there is no such word as "suddenly" except when it goes 'bang'. -- Lozzo Triumph Daytona 955i SE Suzuki SV650 K3 Honda CBR600 F-W Suzuki GSX-R750L Yamaha SR250 SpazzTrakka
darsy says... It's nice to know someone's prepared to pay money for it, but now the engine is rebuilt I doubt I'll be getting rid of it any time soon. My biggest quandry would be how much to let it go for. I make no secret of the fact that it cost me sweet FA plus a touch of bugger all to acquire (I still owe Marina and Owen a drink or three), but since then it's had about 150 quid spent on getting the chassis rebuilt and painted, and a further 150 quid on the engine rebuild. It stands me in at 300 sheets and about 40 hours of lazy work when I was on the dole - but, I'd feel guilty about selling it for any more than what it's cost to build, even though it is worth a lot more than 300 quid. Besides, if I did sell it, what could I replace it with that is anywhere near as nice condition and reliable for that £300? It looks likely to be in my stable for a very long time, but thanks for the offer to buy. -- Lozzo Triumph Daytona 955i SE Suzuki SV650 K3 Honda CBR600 F-W Suzuki GSX-R750L Yamaha SR250 SpazzTrakka
Heh, It ran up to a shade under 80 before the infamous Ken did a re-biuld... Not that he would accept that... Good luck mate...
