Bollocks, you don't even need to activate Dell OEM installs.

  2. And can be installed to do *just* the job you want it too - no more
having to spend a day stripping out[1] all the extra stuff on a server
that you just want to use as a webserver!

Which is a big step forward - and analogous to how most server linux
    distros work.

[1] And fixing the security vulnerabilities. And turning off all the
    insecure defaults.

  3. You obviously missed the part where he had to really dig around to find
drivers to get trivial stuff to work.

People who say "Windows just works" haven't had to do tech support on
    it..

Well, not quite, it crashed for some unknown reason

"The computer hung partway through the installation and so I reverted
back to the restore point that I uncharacteristically and sensibly made

It all runs OK again, but I get

"SQLDUMPER.library failed initialisation ... uninstall and rerun setup"

  6. ...and another two points, until you find the cure on the internet
and stop the service. That's the only machine I've had probs with (Compaq
Presario with added Athlon64X2) -- we even installed it on two LeCroy
    oscilloscopes yesterday!

  7. And I can remember _not_ having to phone MS after any of the _four_
motherboard replacements in my Dell laptop -- and one of them was done in
my office, so Dell sure as hell didn't ring up for me.

  9. Not so. As I wrote above, the machine I'm typing on is running OEM Dell
XP Pro and has never been near Dell. Same with the two or three other
PCs that this OS has been installed on. Not one has ever wanted
activation. In this respect it's just like W2K.
This is from a legit Dell OEM disc and a ser no to suit - so there's
obviously a loophole in the system somewhere.

Are you confusing activation with registration? I've had hundreds of
Dells through my hands in the last few years and had to
install/re-install[1] XP and Vista on loads of them. Not once have I had
to enter the key nor have I had to activate with MS.

AIUI, the install checks the BIOS to ensure that it's a Dell and is
    quite happy with that.

[1]In all sorts of combinations, Vista on machines that came with XP, XP
on machines that came with Vista, XP Pro versus XP home, etc.

Ah, that makes sense. I had a Dell XP reinstall disk, but I did have
to put in a valid COA when I installed it on my non Dell box.

I have a spare unused XP SP2 Dell (genuine) reinstall disc going
begging for beer tokens if someone wants to mail me.
