I thought go for it, live life in the fast lane, install SP3

The computer hung partway through the installation and so I reverted
back to the restore point that I uncharacteristically and sensibly made

It all runs OK again, but I get

"SQLDUMPER.library failed initialisation ... uninstall and rerun setup

So, my question is exactly what do I uninstall and what setup am I to
    rerun ?

and Rob1 - no I don't want to install fucking Linux

    <googles>

seems the update fucks things up if you have an AMD processor. There
doesn't seem to be anything in there of any use, anyway. I've already
installed all of Msoft's "critical" updates. As I've got an AMD Athlon in
this box I'll give it a miss.

Only some of them by the looks of it. My PC is AMD based and SP3 works
fine, but then again it was installed from a bog-standard Microsoft CD
and not a vendor-provided image (which seems to be the cause of the
    problem).

    From elsewhere ...

"Microsoft may not have planned it this way, but XP could end up
rivaling NT and 2000 as the version of Windows with the longest
lifespan. According to recent news reports, Dell, Lenovo, and other
computer manufacturers will continue to sell new PCs running Windows XP
well past Microsoft's June 30 cutoff date.

PC vendors will do so by invoking a downgrade plan that lets them ship a
system with Windows XP installed as long as the customer is also paying
for an upgrade to Vista Business or Ultimate editions, either of which
    is included in each box.

Of course, computer manufacturers aren't the only ones looking for ways
to extend XP's usefulness. One pundit has predicted that Microsoft
itself is going to fast-track Windows 7 to get customers to leapfrog
over the unpopular Vista and go directly from XP to the next version. In
fact, according to the technology site Ars Technica, one major American
corporation, General Motors, is considering doing just that."

Of course, if you have a copy of Vista that you want to give away, I'll
    have it

That's why it's so popular then? MS haven't thought about Joe Public
with this version, but the companies wishing to protect their
    copyrights.

This is, without a doubt, the worst version of Windows to come out and
I reckon that MS knows it. In part, this is due to the fact that as
Windows OS'es go, XP is bloody good now (after a decent couple of SP's)

Indeed, and people are already suggesting that Vista is for the
NT/2000/XP series what ME was for Win95.
