Yes indeed. Also in leaflet INS163/2 it says, "SORN only applies to vehicles where a licence was in force on or after 31 January 1998." -- Tim two#21, YGL#3 & BOTAFOT#84 Due to the limitations of current email, the lip movements may be out of synchronisation as you move your finger under the text while reading. tim dot ukrm2 at dsl dot pipex dot com
I knew that, what I meant was I to infer that your man said we'd be charged at some point in the future?
Ah sorry, no comment was made about future charges. Mind you I didn't ask either. -- Tim two#21, YGL#3 & BOTAFOT#84 Due to the limitations of current email, the lip movements may be out of synchronisation as you move your finger under the text while reading. tim dot ukrm2 at dsl dot pipex dot com
The bike has quietly been rusting away for the last 20 years in a greenhouse. I now intend to rescue it, and return it to its former glory (it's only done 17000 miles) Where does all this fit in with SORN, and what should I do about having everything legal and above board? CU
If it's been off the road for that long, SORN doesn't kick in. It only kicks in on bikes that have been re-taxed since (IIRC) 2000 or thereabouts. So old nails lying in hedges for decades can still lie there. What bike is it, btw?
Something to be aware of is that the new V5s (V5C?) becomes the only valid form of V5 in a years time. You can request a replacement, or alternatively if you SORN it or tax it in the meantime, a replacement V5C will automatically be issued.
Apparently at this present time they are only interested in vehicles taxed since 1998, to be sorn if not used.
WORD OF WARNING ON SORN!!!! apparently having spoken to the DVLA and the folks in Glasgow who send out and deal with the sorn fines, you have only one months grace from the time the tax runs out to either taxing or declaring a sorn. I found out he hard way and got hammered with a £58 fine. Reason my daughters car failed its mot, rather a lot of welding to be done, tax ran out end of April,by end of June got the fine. 8 weeks, minus a few days for the fine to be processed and delivered. Rang the DVLA they passed me over to a deparment in Glasgow. I explained that the car was being taxed as soon as the mot was obtained, and that i hadn't sorned it due too it going back on the road asap. I was basicly told tuff titties, we NORMALLY allow a month, if you are lucky, and the fact that it was undergoing repairs for the MOT is no excuse Sir. TAX OR SORN NO INBETWEEN. Oh and by the way sir you still have to SORN the vehicle even if you are going to tax it at he end of the month, and pay the fine within 28 days or else, (Hmm I guess go straight to jail and do not pass go). So be warned the Government take us all for mugs, we vote them in and they work against us not for us. SORN, SPEED TRAPS and CAMERAS, POOR ROADS, CONJESTION, POLICE WITH NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN PICK ON MOTORISTS, makes motoring an ordeal. If your vehicle is not going to be taxed for two weeks or so seriously think about sorn, or it may cost you like it has me. HOPE THIS WILL SAVE OTHERS FROM MAKING THE SAME IGNORANT MISTAKE AS I MADE.
Its the same old problem though, normal folks are the ones who will get hammered with fines, while the criminal gets away with it. Just means car thefts will increase, and the next craze will be villans cloning registration numbers.
True, true. Could you learn to snip previous posts and maybe sigs, old chap? Makes your posts easier to read.
Especially as that very clever bit of legislation doesn't apply in Scotchland, so you can just order them over the phone
It may do but I'm pretty sure you'll continue to be as ignorant. Very kind imformative reply, I wish every reply was as good as yours Mr Policeman!.
I suspect it's less to do with competence and more to do with legislative control. Although it won't be the last time somethings been forgotten. The Major Gov't 'forgot' to include motorcycles when minimum tread depth went from 1mm to 1.6mm. Stick on letters are pretty obvious. I'd imagine quite the reverse, an older non approved plate would look very out of place on a post 2001 vehicle. More so when the vast majority of vehicles are post 2001 in, say, 9-10 years time. Unless you mean plod are getting fewer. 'Proper' car thieves will be pretty much unaffected. However the casual congestion charging avoidance indignant type will find it a lot more difficult to clone a plate. "If you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear"
Let's hope they don't go into Central London then, 'cos it doesn't sound as though they would pay the congestion charge. . . Ron Robinson
