something wrong

  1. I have a honda Z50JZ and its starting playing up.
    The rectifier has started getting extremely hot, especially when running.
    As in burning smell, way to hot to touch, crackling noise from it when I
    noticed it.
    It happens when the battery is hooked up.

    Is it just that the rectifier is dead, or do I have problems elsewhere?
    At the moment I have just the coil in hooked up, and everything is fine.
    If I hook the battery up everything turns bad.

    Well, there's a technical term for that ... 'fucked' comes to mind.
    Something in there is shorting and thus arcing, I'd say. Is there
    any sign of damage to the wires?

    You might want to check your wiring diagram ... if the rectifier
    is in the wrong way it might conceivable do this ...

    I suggest you play "check the alternator for shorts", followed by a a round of "is it my rectifier or my regulator?"

  4. The froggle diode has a reverse impulse regeneration module which in
    normal running allows up to 6.5Kva to pass. Obviously, in this case, the
    component has degraded, allowing higher currents.

    Ever heard the sound and smelt the smell of bacon and eggs
    frying ?

    Well the sound you can hear and smell you can smell is the
    regulator frying.
    As someone said check out all the alternator output etc against
    a workshop manual.
