Unforgetting being nipped on the raes by a flock of impetinent geese,
and having to resort to expanding my brolly to keep the savage abstrads
at bay, I should expect Pip to be quickly develop a healthy respect for
any goose in a foul fowl mood. I serpently wouldn't like to offer them
    my face within pecking range.

When I were about thirteen I were asslauted by a hissing gander, so I
stuck my fist in its open beak and advanced on it. It backed-off,
closely follered by me and my clenched fist [3·4½] until it was in its
own fromt garding. Then I shut the gate, and three elderly ladies
clapped furiously, having, they told me, been nipped somewhere they'd
rather not mention [101] while trying to pass.

[3·4½] still in beak and still attached to my arm

[101] presumably so as not to inflame my youthful whore moans

You should have dragged it the other direction - towards your kitchen.
I imagine having a gander at their lisks would inflame something.

This was West Mersea and I were shooping. (And while the fambly were
shooping, my grilfiend, who were left behind in East Mersea had managed
to get swept more'n a mile out to sea on our raft. Fortunately, she were
spooted by one Peter Mirrington, who rowed out and towed her back in.)
I got the impression that the weapon of choice was a stern-chaser.

I'm reliably informed that this is a wood pigeon. It appears to have
mites of some sort around the beak, indicating it's ill (they usually
    keep them clean and shiny).

Best advice is to keep your bird tables / feeders clean (otherwise
bird-poisonous mould can appear), and if it sits there suffering put
the poor thing out of it's misery.

I'm not convinced on the Wood Pigeon thing, Chris. If only I'd
bothered to take a pic of the WP that was strolling along the roof this
    morning.
    That's good advice, though.

  11. It is (or was!) about the size and shape of a wood-pigeon,
    but definitely not the markings.
    Roight! Where's that bleach?

I had the old man have a look. He cross referenced it with a few books
because he wasn't 100%, it doesn't match the markings of any other
pigeon or dove of that size, and wood pigeon is the closest by far. If
he says it's a wood pigeon it's a wood pigeon for me - he knows how to
sort the Wheatear from the Chaff.

It's a woodpigeon, and probably quite a young one.
