Ventures into son's room (scary) picks book from shelf, checks. So it
    is. I didn't spot that.

I had a look for The Blank Slate at the library last night, but it
was listed as being at Windsor Old Library, so I opted for Pretty
Straight Guys instead. Along with the copy of The Closed Circle that
I'd had put by (very Coe, follows on quite well, similar level of
    political anger to Carve Up)

Why crap? It's just a frivolous crime-thrillery novel, innit?

    I don't much do fiction.[1]

I don't know why, it just doesn't do it for me.

I'd fought my way through some "classics"[2] on holiday, and fancied a
    bit of a change.

There was a lot of fuss about it, so I thought I'd see why. I failed.
I presume some people found the content a bit iffy. I just hated the
    ending.

All in all, it was a rather whelming[3]experience.

[1] I admit to rather enjoying that Mr Pratchett's stuff, but it's
overtly trivial nonsense, and no worse for all that.
[2] Old English lit[4]., not ancient Greek and Latin.
[3] Neither over, or under, it wasn't interesting enough for that.
[4] Dickens, mainly. Dreary beyond belief. The only bit I liked was
the fact that I'd been drunk in most of the pubs mentioned in
    "Pickwick Papers".
