That may be so, but for plodding back and forth to work, it was ideal,
being a shafty and all that.

  2. That's what I did, 30 years ago, when I was a student with a Ford Escort

  3. I'd agree with both of you.

It was incredibly good at what it was designed to do, but the design
brief omitted anything remotely related to fun and enjoyment.

This is 80% "intox" (French for "spin"). They haven't got the money to
purchase any significant number of units, and, unlike the local gatsos,
this remains manpower intensive. So they may have a truck or two, and
use them sporadically in places where bikers on sports bikes abound,
like races or the Vincennes weekly gathering. But the random lone biker
    isn't an easy target.
Not really. A paper in MotoMagazine discussed this a while ago, and it
seems that the insurance can deny payment only if they can demonstrate
that you significantly changed the risk, /for the accident under
consideration/. And unless you hit someone at over 240km/h it is going
to be very difficult to do so. Of course, after that they can kick you
    out :)

PS: you have been suggested a TDM. YKIMS. Unbeatable for commuting,
    especially in nasty weather.

This is very true. It's like reverse entropy.

quite possibly - you'd wonder how they managed to get as little as 98
horses out of a modern FI 1250 engine in the first place....

All my vehicles, including the dead one, are on Swiss plates and
insurance. The reasoning is different, of course, and it most
certainly doesn't save me money that way.

  11. As an aside, they powers-that-be in France were talking a while back
about raising our 130 km/h (81 mph) limit to 140 km/h (87 mph) or even
(IIRC) to 150 km/h (93 mph) on motorways. Needless to say, we had the
'sécurité routière' arsewipes crawling out from under their rocks,
screaming that if it happened, civilisation as we know it would come to
a hideous end, and carnage would reign on the roads.

  14. Still being a newbie when it comes to techie stuff .. i) why do bike
manufacturers sell litre-class bikes that produce no more horses than a
reasonable 500cc [1] ..? And ii) why do people buy them ?

    The wide spread of torque.

Torque is essentially a function of the force you get when the fuel/air
mix in a cylinder goes bang, and power is a function of torque and
engine speed. If you want bonkers power, you need to make torque higher
    up the rev range.

The trouble is, torque is also affected by the relationship between
engine speed and factors like valve timing, so unless you have some way
of modifying those factors (eg. V-TEC) dynamically as engine speed
changes, you'll find that the further up the rev range you push the
torque curve, the crappier it gets lower down. This is the sacrifice of
midrange for top-end power and ultimately results in a 2-stroke style
power band - 2-stroke engines suffer the same kind of problem but
    massively amplified.

If you want something that pulls like a train from 2000rpm, it's
unlikely to be the same engine that produces 180bhp while bouncing off
the limiter. Horses for courses, innit.

Midrange. A Bandit 1250 makes around 80 ftlbs torque at less than 4k
rpm. A GSXR1000 makes about 80 ftlbs at 9k rpm. If you want Bandit
midrange with gixxer top-end you have to use things like variable valve
timing/variable length inlets, which would push Bandits & their ilk
well above the 'cheap commuter' market price range.

You are just _so_ wrong on this. All of the stuff about torque vs.
power is pretty much accurate, but if you take a liter+ bike engine
design it for 180 bhp, the torque available at 2k is more than you'd
ever want, as is the spread through the rev range.

I'm with Krusty on this one. "More than you'd ever want" is *entirely*
