Just lurking...too much work. Had a nice trip to Lake Powell in late
May. The pics are at my Yahoo pictures site.

I'm not quite used to it myself, but here in San Diego the Fire
Department has added Emergency Services to their name. As for what
looks like overreaction, I suppose that the rationale is that people
making 911 calls aren't always in the best position to judge what
resources will be needed, and since response time is critical to a
successful outcome, having a range of capabilities and resources on the
    scene improves the odds.

The one time I called for help was when I was locked out on my balcony.
As it turns out, they were able to find a master key and get into my
apartment and open the balcony doors from the inside, but I suppose the
hook and ladder truck was good backup in case that didn't work.

In San Francisco, the fire department was quite explicit about theyr
change in organization. it used to be that there was a fire department
and a city ambulance service. They had to duplicate all their
communication infrastructure and then work out how to coordinate their
efforts. Some time ago they merged. Now every firefighter is also a
paramedic and there's just one command and communications
infrastructure. At the same time, the nature of calls has changed:
First, people have by and large gotten wise on fire safety. Houses don't
catch fire as much as they used to. Second, people have gotten older, so
the number of calls having to do with heart attacks and the like has
increased. So the whole switch makes sense.
And they'd much rather help you out that way than come pick you up off
the ground after you fell off the drainpipe trying to climb up on your
    own. }: )
