You don't really get the whole 'tool porn' thing, do you.

Shame on you. It's a tool, ffs. A *power* tool. One that makes noise, &
causes injury, & has the power to destroy metal. How could you *not*
    need one?

A vice and a steady hand?

    .... is the correct answer.

I'll have to sneak it into the garage. And tidy up the bench, too: I
made a space to fit the bench grinder, but I'd rather put the drill
where that is, and I've still got to find a space for the vice as well.

Not for how often I lockwire stuff, it doesn't.

  7. A cow-orker has found another good use for a bench drill -- putting
a 6 mm hole straight through surplus hard disk drives to render them
compliant with the Uni's directive on disposal of data carriers.

The scrutineers mustn't have been looking properly.

  9. Of course you do. I bought one of those about 6mon ago and it's been
fine - not the piece of cheap shit I was expecting for that price,
although the vice could be a bit bigger.

You'd be surprised just how much difference a bench drill makes to
accuracy of cut and the sheer ease of handling. It's also highly
entertaining when a piece of metal gets whipped out of your hand and
    narrowly misses your ear.

  11. Not as entertaining as when you forget to remove the lathe chuck key
and it whips out on start-up and smacks you in the solar plexus.

What a waste. And for a Uni too. Not like it's state secrets or
    anything.

We used to take a 14lb sledge hammer to our 12" platters at BAe.

I'm sure you could get fairly complete data recovery on a modern drive
with a neat hole through the HDA. One pass only though probably, and a
    bit copy only.

    Cheers,

    Paul.
