Some phone questions.

At the moment I'm on PAYG with 02 and own a Sony Ericsson K800i. My
phone usege amounts to roughly 30 quid a month and a fair chunk of that
is taken up by text messaging. With a bill that high I figured I might
as well go on contract so I've been shopping about.

02 are doing an 18 month duration tarrif that gives 1000 texts, 600
    minutes and a choice of one add-on for 35 quid a month - I think I'd go
for the unlimited data add-on so I can use it for web and email when
away from home. If I sign up I get a choice of phones free, of which I
quite like the look of the Nokia N95 8Gb as it has a basic GPS built
in, and I can transfer my existing PAYG number across.

    Good move or not?

I'm considering the deal I outlined because I was thinking about buying
a GPS anyway, and those who use the N95 think the GPS on that is pretty
decent for a phone, plus I like the unlimited data in the price. My
text useage doesn't run to 1000 a month, but I do spend a fair bit of
time on the phone so the minutes would come in handy. I want a clever
phone, I already have two reasonable[1] ones but want more.

    T mobile's Flext30 online deal is better.. 700 mins, 1400 texts, and
Mobile internet for £30 a month.

    Or for £31.50 Flext 35, wiv 1000 mins, 2000 texts and t'interwebs.

    Free N96 16Gb.

I'm pretty sure you can chop your add-ons around if you wanted the
unlimited data, but you'd have to give up free unlimited weekend calls
or whatever add-on you already have. The N96 is all very well, but I
don't really have any need for a TV on my phone and I'd have to pay
lots extra to get one; the N95 8Gb is thrown into the deal I outlined
    at no extra cost.

I just checked this one out, an N96 on this plan would cost me an
    additional £146-80.

My contract (18month) is with "3" and I get 600 minutes and 300 texts (but
you can do deal things with the minutes/texts). Cross networks of course. 20
    quid including VAT.

Someone (can't remember who) is offering a reasonable deal and giving away a
laptop too (I think it might be PC World BICBW)

as mentioned to Champ in another thread, sign up to Quidco and get up to
£100 rebate. O2 is £40 going direct or £60 if you sign up via CPW.

Check if the GPS is a SatNav or is it just a toy that tells you where
you are. I've got three phones that'll tell me where I am but only one
that I'd trust to take me somewhere else iyswim.

I'm on T Mobile Flext plan of some description or another and it's
worked on value rather than a certain number of texts and minutes so
you just work your way through the £200 or whatever it is however you
want. I also get free web and walk mobile internet but the coverage
isn't brilliant so I hardly ever use it.

That's what I've got and it's not a bad phone. I don't use the phone
for listening to music so massive memory isn't an issue.

Make sure that the price you pay for the phone also includes the GPS
software. Some providers will sell you a phone with a built-in GPS
receiver, but you'll have to get the software and maps yourself. At
    extra cost, obviously.

Good point, I shall check that out. Is it possible to acquire ripped
    software from anywhere?

I know you wanted a flashy phone in, but Orange on their website have a
January deal, £24.46 a month, 18 months, 600 anytime minutes and unlimited
texts... It's only with the cheaper phones, and the N95 is out of stock,
unsure if it's included in the deal or not (N96 is like £170) but some of
the free phones aren't bad. I have just upgraded from a Nokia 6300 for
example, it's basically just the standard Nokia, thin, light, has all the
normal features but no GPS. Mine was reliable and did the job perfectly
    though.

Worth a thought maybe? You can always buy a phone seperately afterall.

I specifically want an N95 for the GPS and the 02 deal gives unlimited
data so using the GPS will effectively cost me nothing. I think I'll go
with the 02 deal as I've had great service from 02 in the past few
    years.
