    I'd say it's got something to do with the 500cc capacity difference, the
    extra weight, and the increase of twisty roads. I noticed my rear tyre
    always chewed up nicely when I had a pillion on compared to normal. Add in
    the extra grunt and you've got a good recipe to chew tyres reasonably
    quickly.
