I'm considering investing in a set of sports panniers for the Chimay
trip, any recommendations anyone? Going by the Oxford thread they
might be a good option, but I need to know if anyone has had any
handling problems using sports panniers at speed on their bike.

I've got a set of panniers that I've had for years but they are
literally just throwovers and don't have any straps to secure them and
stop them from flapping, hence at speeds >50mph the bike [1] starts to
weave. They hold a lot of luggage and are handy for using on the IOM
but not something I want to travel to Belgium and back with.

[1] Well, the GPX did when I was in a rush to get to Heysham one year
so I tend not to use them much.

Indicated 140mph, 2-up, with Oxford throwovers and top-box on the TRX.
Front end was a bit light, but didn't give me any real cause for
    concern.

Probably closer to 125mph in reality, but that's plenty fast when you're
    loaded and carrying a pillion.

Nope, they're fine. Ours were somewhat cheaper than the Oxford ones,
but needed repairing so probably a false economy.

I had some throwovers (Not Oxford) - coming back from Le Mans in the early
hours up the M20 I thought my mate was up for a race - he came past at speed
gesticulating - so orf I went. It transpired that he wasa trying to tell me
the throwovers had slipped and caught fire. Apparently it was quite
spectacular for a while until I realised. One very burnt towel and a toasted
    Nikon[1] later we arrived home.

There's a moral in here somewhere but there ya go.

[1] I did my best to break it - it went off the back of the bike in the
camera bag at 70mph+ on another occasion collecting a few more dents but
still worked fine. A credit to Nikon

I've ridden a CBR600 from the Moselle to Calais with M&P's "Caverdale" soft
panniers reinforced with a couple of bungee cords to stop them billowing.

Average speed was 70mph for the 300 miles which included stopping for
petrol twice and about 70 miles on non-motorway.

Indicated 140 at times which was a bit unstable.

Cruising at an indicated 120 was no problem.

Cheers all - with any luck the offer of borrowing a set of Oxford this
    evening will turn out well.

I did a fair bit of googling before I went to work this evening and can
get a set of Oxford's virtually half-price, except they won't arrive
here before I leave, so borrowing a set looks like the best option for
    now.

Been fine on VFR750, ZX9 and Fazer 1000 at eeek speeds. Well not on my
knackered VFR, that was fine at "ho hum" speeds.

    Highly recommended.

    cheers
