Sodding Pipex again

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Apr 20, 2006.

  1. Once again, they've decided to do "maintenance" on their servers. Their
    web server, this time.

And it's cut off all my web space, which happens to host my Ebay auction
pictures, so the dozen auctions I'm running have no bloody pix.

Terms and conditions of Service (for the webspace bit):

    3. Users acknowledge that PIPEX do not guarantee the continuation of
all or part of this service or guarantee its availability.

Yes it sucks, but it's free. If it were a paid hosting service I'd
agree more strongly with you. Could you try one of the image hosting
sites for your auctions, or is there a reason you don't use them?

  4. TOG@toil, ,
Be warned, most of those freebie photo storage sites are blocked under
the likes of Websense, 3rd party corporate proxies.

As an example, if I viewed an ebay auction at work, which displayed
photos that were hosted on photobox storage, I'd not see the photos. Of
course if I was genuinely interested, I'd look again from home, but
that's dependant on remembering and of course duration remaining. It
    also curbs impulse bidding.

Just figured you might like to consider this before possible narrowing
    your audience.

No, that makes perfect sense, which is why I'm quite happy to pay a few
quid for a decent hosting server. It's like the German news server - if
it works, and works reliably, then it's always worth the few quid.

I have 17 auctions up atm, and the photos have been down for over 24
hours, so working on the basis that no pic = distinct lack of buyer
interest, this has already cost me more than a year's subs to a decent
host. Which is why I'd appreciate a recommendation.

I use Zen at home, very reliable and you get a very good news server
    included.

I used them when I had a go at running a small business for a couple of
years. Very good, very reliable and very cheap.

A lot of people round here use Purple Cloud -
    http://www.purplecloud.net/home/

You'd need to buy a domain name, I think, but a .uk is peanuts these days.

Ah well, thanks for all the offers, folks - I forgot I had some
webspace[1] with a paid-for email operation elsewhere, so I've shoved
the pix up there, apart from those on auctions where bids have already
started (you can't edit the pictures once you've received a bid).

    [1] I know, I know....

You can have (less than) 1Mb for free at www.andale.com, over that and
they will charge you but it's not that much [1].
They will let you have any size pictures for your auction and it's
quite easy to link pictures to your auction.

Shame their website is such a pain to navigate around.

[1] You will have to register a credit card with them.

You can *add* pix, though. Duplicate the borked pix, shove 'em on yer
alternative webspace and link 'em up - Bob's yer wotsits.

  18. Seem OK now, and I managed to re-host most of them anyway.

I'm slightly pissed off that Pipex's attitude is "It's a free service so
don't moan" because as far as I'm concerned, it's part and parcel of my
    broadband subscription.

This would be the same pipex that now only does minimum 12 month
contracts, and only lets customers leave when they pay all 12 months
    worth of fees.

Interesting - I've just cancelled Pipex, having paid from last December
for a year, and they are refunding the balance of the year. Pro rata, which
is fair enough. Mind you, my contract goes back to 1994.
