    I recently purchased a 1998 (S) Renault Laguna 1.6 RT Sport with
138000 on the clock. Bodywork is pretty tatty having been abused by a
lunatic female (collegue) for the last 50000 miles.

Does this qualify as a SOC and if so when can I expect it to burst
    into flames?

Being used to our Ford Focus I reckon it drives real nice [1] in a big
comfy car kind of way. Surprisingly nippy too for a 1.6.

[1] Although I do tend to drive like I have Miss Daisy in the back.

I've asked a few people lately what sort of mileage can be had from a
moderately well serviced modern engine. Answers varied from 150,000
to infinity! Why do you say another 50,000? I thought engines had
got to the point nowadays that from a running cost POV if looked after
will outlast the rest of the car.
12 months tax and 6 months MOT for £500. If I get 12 months use out
of it which I'm pretty confident I will I'll be happy, anything else
    is a bonus.

That's not bad at all. Personally I'd rather have 6 months tax and 12

Which you'll probably get you're money back on if you buy right. makes sense
    to me.

That's not bad at all. Personally I'd rather have 6 months tax and
I've been doing this for years - if you can find something that goes with a
longish tax and mot for diddly squat you're usually quids in. In London I'd
often get a mobile shed with 6 months T&T for a two or three hundred quid,
cheap TPO insurance - who cares if it gets knicked? More than one went to
the scrappy at the end of their time, although a few were sold getting a
good proportion of the original amount back, and in one famous case sold
    making 100% profit.

I had one of those, a while back.

    113mph £80 fine and 28 days off [1]

[1] just in time for Christmas :)

    *snort*

I can just see you writing a motoring column, where your review is
based on the points/fine/ban/prison sentence you got with the vehicle.

The one for the Gixxer should be a doozy...

The trouble is, all the old ones have just blurred in to one long
    string of events ;-)

Just finished the first 500 and begin the run up to 9k
    rpm...err...it's FAST.

It's also starting to move around a little now; which is fine, but I
forgot what it's like to *move around* at speed >120mph. Route on
    Monday night:
Home, Slaughters, Stow, Broadway, Winchcombe, Cheltenham and Home
    again.

It's gradually coming back to me :)

Tell me you've had the front wheel off the ground. Accidentally.
    Coo. Sounds fun.
I'm sort of a bit nervous about us going out together on them :)

That was just to get to the DVD shop :)
Not fear, just...in trepidation, no...err apprehension,
    no...err...hesitation, no...err vacillation; yes that's it..I think
