SOBMW - how much?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Aug 14, 2004.

  1. Woo!

Depends entirely on condition. This should be the early Paralever model
with the tubeless tyres, but without the external tubular fairing
    protector.

1500 quids' worth all day long, if it's clean, undinged, and has, sa,
less than 40k on the clock.

If you can get it for a grand you're laughing. However, Timo's yer man
for the real advice on ShiteOldBoxers.

1989 R80-GS, private seller, new MoT. That's about all I know at
present. Assuming nothing's broken & it's average mileage & condition,
    how much should I pay?

The Older Gentleman was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
I think 1500 would be a *very* good price, these things are very, very
sought after still. If it's lowish mileage (<20k) and in good nick, up
to 2k-2.5k are still within the 'pretty good price' range.
    - Don't believe the mileage on these (especially if it's really low)
unless the previous owner has *all* the records to show the mileage
is genuine. These bikes are notorious for eating their speedos.

    - They do take special luggage (left pannier is narrower than the
right one in order to clear the exhaust), make sure it's there as
they cost a mint to replace compared to the standard ones. Standard
ones fit but do upset the balance somewhat.

    - Check for anything that indicates off-road use and factor in the
increased wear & tear. They are OK off-road but very heavy, so
changes are that they've been dropped often.

    - Any bits on there that say 'HPN' increase the value and suggest that
the previous owner knew what he was doing. Especially desirable are
the large rally tanks that hold continent-crossing amounts of fuel
(43l AFAIR). However, a lot of people who make these mods to GSs
then ride across Africa/South America/Russia or similar far-flung
places. Doesn't necessarily do the bikes any good, that.

    - Dual-plugging and an oil cooler again are desirable mods, as are the
rev counter & clock, which live in separate pods and are standard on
the 100, but not the 80.

    - Usual SOBMW checks apply, condition of the driveshaft, oil leaking
    where it shouldn't etc pp.

How about swapping a SOBMW for a SWMBO?

Ewww. Sure that it's not a red one?
Depends entirely on the condition of the bike, though.

Lol no you're ok ta. My opinion of more modern beemers is similar to
yours, hence there's a Tiger in my sig & not a GS. I do have a soft spot
    for the old 80GS though.

Looks about right from the photo I saw. Oh, & it's orange (which I
    suspect isn't original).
Thanks, a tad less than he's asking, but well within haggling range.

Indeedy. I've been sort of looking for a pre-paralever model to replace
the one I stupidly sold in the 80s, but they're very few & far between.

The guy bought it to use for 2-up off-roading, but has hardly used it (I
know him). It came with road tyres so I doubt the previous owner did,
but I'll certainly look for things like rock-damaged fins. If I get it,
it'll be used just for off-roading anyway, so I'm not fussed about
cosmetics. I had one about 16 years ago
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/preston.kemp/gs.jpg) & loved using it off-
road, especially blasting down ruts with the pots bouncing off the sides
    bob sleigh style ;-)
Good stuff, thanks for all the info, much appreciated.

Nope, definitely orange - with some apparently rather good air-brush
work on the headlight surround. It'll all get stripped & powder coated
if I get it anyway, & all the superfluous plastic removed.
