Cheers for all the advice folks, and with that being the final straw that
persuaded me I`m now the owner of a rather nice condition 1979 CX500.

Picking it up was half the fun. On cold, pissing down nights as this,
remember your waterproofs. You`ll be well fucked off after riding home on an
unfamiliar bike nigh on 40 miles without them. Drowned rat? Ohhh yes...

Anyway, 32,500 genuine miles, been owned by the same bloke for the last 17
years who managed to put a prize-winning 10,000 miles on it in all that
time, going by the heap of old MOT documents I got with it. Full 12 months
MOT and Tax. A rather fetching original shade of blue, and an engine that
sounds quite sweet. No rattles, knocks, odd noises and it pulls quite
strongly. 85Mph on the east lancs road coming home without even trying, and
the only thing that stopped me going further was that visibility was down to
a couple of yards at this point due to the heavy rain. Newish tyres,
calipers rebuilt not so long ago, camchain/tensioner/mechanical seal
replaced a couple of thousand miles ago. Carbs rebuilt not so long ago also.

Slight corrosion on the front mudguard, slight shallow dent in the tank, and
thats about it. "I`m not one for riding in the rain", he told me. And you
can tell it`s lived an easy decade and a half in the warmth of his garage.
All for the princely sum of £550.

All in all, I`m quite chuffed.)

    In
Rather nice?? It's probably the tidiest CX500 I've seen for years!
Was a bit wet out, nice and warm in the Merc though.

Still, you looked like you were having fun, and the CX sounded great on its
    80 mph "fly by".

    So you should be.

I like the CX, but I've only ever seen shitty ones. Wouldn't mind a 650
    Tubo. :)

I looked at a couple of CX's before I ended up with the Bandit.

They did have a certain apeal, but the ones I came across either looked
likes piles of shit, or none of the numbers matched the documents.

It sounds like you got a bargain.

  9. Oldest brother has one and yes - the handling can best be described as
    'interesting'.

Mind you, his isn't in prime condition and the brakes have seen better
days. And the tyres fitted by the previous owner are the cheapest of
    the cheap..
