Heh, AOL for my office too. Primarily because my Merkin colleagues
don't want the hassle of trying to communicate things to my French
    colleagues.

It has its upside, but jeez, sometimes it's really fscking annoying
when they pester you all the time...

I kept my existing NT desktop over the course of the conversion, so I
could support our users. I wish I'd kept the laptop on NT now as well,
given how slow it runs under XP and how seriously CRAP MS's
    suto-synchronisation is.
What, not even email, news, word-processing, web-browsing etc.?

The eagle-eyed may notice that I made a few posts with Pan yesterday. I
*really* like it. I need a bit more familiarity with Mandrake, and
absolute certainty that all the software I need has a linux equiv. and
that all the data I have will be accessible and I'd think about moving
    to it fulltime.

You won't catch me recompiling kernels and all that shit, though.

Well while I do use a desktop for that, I don't have to. For all that
kind of stuff OpenOffice would work just as well.

The only real *quality* moment on the whole thing was the clip of the copper
who didn't make the turn right at the beginning (when in pursuit of said
"Ghost Rider") and ended up T-boned. The first video he did was far more
entertaining IMHO, prolly 'cause it was all new.

How was that to install? I seem to have a computer that defies logic to
    prevent me installing things.

So far Gentoo has fallen by the wayside, and slackware is teetering. I
don't have the time or the inclination to faff around trying to get
things to work. I don't care if something is "broken" for some
    hideously technical reason.

In short, is Mandrake the Blaney distro of choice?

Heh, me too. I'm in the process of installing a new machine with 9.2.
Jeez there are so many things I need to sort out with transferring the
existing config files from the old machine to the new, it's
    unbelievable.

Mined Ewe, it's a thousand times easier to migrate than from a windows
    platform.

How I do know what version I've got? I tried ver.
    *shudder*

Is 9.2 so much better than...*whatever* that it's worth it?

I'm sure my FreeBSD box updates itself nice and quietly.

Oh yeah - and how do I connect to my Windows 2000 server? I've tried all
    the obvious.

    cat /proc/version
I'm sure it is, but tbh, I've used it as an excuse to buy a new PC,
install XP on the new PC and use the old one for a new install of
    Mandrake.

As for updates, I tend not to do them unless:

    a - It's a security update
    b - Something's borked

My way of thinking, is generally, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Samba is the easiest for folder access from the W2K machine to the
linux machine. smbmount also works for access from the linux machine
to windows. A command in the form of :

    smbmount //cab/c$ cab -o username=cab,password=toto

generally does the job. (I use that to monitor disk space usage on one
of our servers, through nagios on the linux box)

What other sort of access do you need though?

  19. If you remember we looked at house prices while we were there and they
    weren't that cheap

But yep, Laszlo's paying for me, you and Nik to go

    What a diamond geezer

Oh, slight change on the US trip, too - we're looking at riding south to
    north in Florida instead
