So where's the music

I felt the urge to have a particular piece of music on the latest video
I'm editing, which happened to be something I don't have on CD. That's
OK, I thought, there are free download sites all over the net. 1 hour
later, I gave up. Sure there are thousands of hits for a given song or
album, and you click on them and it all looks good, talking about free
MP3s etc etc, but when you get through all the crap, you're directed to a
site where you have to pay actual money. That doesn't sound like free to
me. So are people actually paying for pirated material, or is it all a
    fallacy?

If you want to download it illegally then get a Peer to Peer program.
If you don't mind paying then go to one of the half dozen or so big legal
    sites.
There haven't been any web page based illegal MP3 sites for a very long
time. They are way to obvious a target for record companies.

  3. P2P and services like Easynews are the way to go, unless you /want/ to
explore endless "free mp3" links and view pr0n pop-ups along the way :)

My other half is a teacher and she often asks me to track down music for
school plays etc. I've only failed to find a "shareware" version of
    something once.

Don't they work by sharing bandwidth, ie I would have to facilitate
storage and uploading, to get any benefits. I've never tried it, because
I'm on pikey dial-up, and I've never really had the need.
I guess that's an option. Sometimes though, when editing videos the first
piece of music I choose doesn't fit, so hence my looking for a download to
try it out as it were. Plus I only need 33 seconds.
    Makes sense.

Don't you need permission to use someone's music in your video?

You do actually have to pay a fee to be provided with a licence that
allows you to use music on a video.

If I could be arsed to go downstairs I could find out more info, but
    I'm feeling a tad can't-be-arsed atm.

Not necessarily, but true the vast majority of the time

I'd be interested to know the details on this. Perhaps one of the
exceptions is for personal use. I currently own on CD all music that I
have used. My hunt for an MP3 was to see if it would fit in, but I've
subsequently abandoned the segment anyway. If I were selling my videos,
then I would definitely need to be getting permission.
