This is a new one on me.

I list item I just want rid of, starting price of 99p and no reserve.
One person bids, item sells for 99p. He sends me £8.99 "just to make it
    worth your while listing it"

    What's that all about then?

Dunno but I had similar emails when I was trying to sell my Divvy via
Autotrader. Words to the effect of
"I'll send you £2000 for your bike advertised at £750 and you pay us
the balance when we pick it up"
How has he paid you? Mind you it seems a bit pointless scamming for
just £8, perhaps you've landed a really pikey scammer.

Dunno, but ask him if he wants to pay over the odds for any GSX600F
    bits, will you?

Given the change to cheque clearance mentioned last week, I'm looking
forward to the next scammer who tries that one with me :)

Yep, payment received by Paypal. I think he may just be an unusually
nice bloke who happens to need a dented and scratched 7R tank.

He knew it was worth more than the 99p and was thoughtful enough to pay what
he thought a more rea;istic price.

Not all people are cunts as Champ said just a few days ago.

Is it really worth while going to the effort of eBaying something
worth less than, say ten quid?

It's hard to know what an item's "worth" will be before the auction
ends. Something that sells for 99p one week may go for 30 quid the
next, it just depends who and how many are bidding.

Besides, the alternatives were skipping it, which would be a waste of a
usable tank, or trying to punt it out on Freecycle in which case it'd
go to any old charlie and not necessarily someone who really wanted it.
Doing it as an auction (esp. one that says it's for collection only
because I CBA to post it) makes for a handy crap filter.

I once won something for £0.01, as they'd not set sensible start price, and
I felt a little sorry for them and gave them a fiver instead.

You do get them occasionally. I flogged my old Z250 to a bloke from Bristol
who turned up without any insurance so he just sat on the bike and revved it
up a couple of times then agreed to pay what I'd asked for it, no bargaining
or anything. Then when I dropped it off at his house (with SWMBO and kids in
the cage to pick me up) he couldn't find all the money that his wife had
left in the house. So he was only going to leave us in the house on our own
whilst he went off to ask his wife where she'd left the balance (about
£300). I could have buggered off with the money, the bike, his nice new
computer etc. When I said that perhaps we'd better wait outside he the went
off and left the house unlocked.

I sold the eldest sprogs Micra for her when she moved[1] and a bunch
of lads turned up to look and just said we'll have it here's the cash.
I had to ask them if they would check the paperwork, that it ran etc
    otherwise I'd have felt guilty.

[1] Not insured and no off road at her place

lol. Nice. I wish some of the punters buying my stuff at knock down
prices [1] (wtf is it about Ebay at the moment ?) were as decent.

[1] Start low to attract a bit of interest, get over 10 watchers, and
the price stays as dead as a nail. :(
