  2. I've been using a Gericke Tribal Blouson for the last two years - been
washed once & still waterproof. The newer ones now come with a
    removable thermal liner.

I've noticed this at any speed, however my commute is 60 miles.
I can't fit bloody Alpinestars 'cos they're too thin in the calf area-
    and that's a size 9.5 or 10.

I got m'boy a textile jacket at the NEC show last year, waterproof, cordura,
armoured for £50.00 on the basis that if it was shite it wasn't the end of
the world and we could then look a bit more up market. He has ridden almost
every day since in all weathers and it seems actually very good, i.e warm,
no leaks, no zip or fastener failures (luckily he hasn't tested it under
crash conditions, so can't comment on the armour effectiveness). Anyway, so
impressed was I that I got myself one at Ally Pally, again £50.00. Hav e
worn mine twice so far, last time in driving rain on the M40, again, no
leakages and very warm. The mob was called "Hunter", ISTR they operate out
of North London, might be worth a Google for.

Not going to bang on about what my favourite brand is; I don't have one.

I have here [looks to back of computer-room door] a
soon-to-be-flogged-on-eBay type GoreTex Belstaff jacket wot is about two
and a bit years old and barely "run-in"

    Wot size are you?

The jacket is a XXL, I think; equates to 48"-50" chest, anyway.

Well, having read the thread it seems that the obvious choice
for you would be Richa or HG. I'll stick in my oar in with
a resounding 'yay' for HG gear. I can't remember how much
my Tribal Evo was when I bought it from that nice Mr. Lozzo
last summer - I think it may be over budget for you, but
it is a very good waterproof jacket. However, as I don't ride
that much when it's very cold, I can't vouch for warmth on a
long, cold commute although I suspect with plenty of layers
    underneath it would be fine.

My advice woud be to get to your nearest HG shop or Richa
dealer and try some on. You may well find that an extra
20 or 30 quid spent to get something that fits properly
and is comfortable for you is worth that extra.

I have a 5-year old Gericke Nexus jacket that's withstood everything
without any cause for concern. The stitching holding the Velcro in the
front pocket's a bit pants, but it's not a big problem.

As an aside, my HG classic winter gloves go on the outside of the
jacket and are lovely and warm and dry.

    Dunno.

I paid £150 quid or so for my Dainese Dry-Line (in a sale, reduced
from 240 or so) and it's been absolutely great - completely
waterproof, warm even when it's snowing, and survived a crash with
    absolutely no marks.

we've done this before, but the Gericke all-seasons jacket I had
before wasn't nearly as good as the (cheaper) Dainese jacket I have
    now.

which actually shows you've got a reasonable sense of self-restraint.
Much better to have done this than spent good money on shite, just
because "you were at the show".

I thank you, but the wife says "when are you going to get this bleeding
jacket, I'm sick of hearing about it"

I can now tell her I'm just showing self-restraint ;-)

I haven't got a Gericke jacket, but I do have a Dainese jacket that will be
    three years old in July
which has been crashed in twice (not at high speed but some flying involved
in both cases) and has done about 20k miles and
it's doing okay aside from a popper on the cuff which came off after about a
    month and some slightly frayed
bits on the elastic strap thing - otherwise it's still 100% waterproof,
    comfortable and in use...

I'm not particularly "down" on Gericke - my two-piece leathers are
from them, and they've been mostly fine (the gel armour in the sleeves
has a habit of getting out of shape sometimes, though).

And my armoured waterproof trousers are from them, and have been warm
and waterproof for the past 4 years. It was just the jacket - after a
couple of winters it had lost most of it's waterproofing, and the
inside-double-seal thing at the front had got very frayed. I've only
had the Dainese one for 2 years now, but it - pretty muchg literally -
    looks as good as new.

I went the other way - changed a Dainese dry-line for an HG, but mainly
because HG in Kenton are a darn site easier for me to get to than
    Sondel Sport for Dainese.

After three years the Dainese did need a regular coating of Nikwax to
remain waterproof and the only real reason I changed was that the
inside collar which was made of a plastic/vinyl material started to go
a bit funny and would leave a black mark on whatever I wore underneath.
I never found anything that would remove the mark, even to the extent
    of bleaching white work shirts.

well, I got my Dainese in the (now closed) Carnells about 250m from
where I used to live. I haven't been to Sondel Sport in years - are
    they even still open?
mine's been fine, really, I've not needed to top up the waterproofing
at all. The Gericke needed regular treatment after the first couple of
years, and was fucked after 4.
    odd.

You misunderstand. I expected it too, so I placed this simple,
unfunny placeholder in order to prevent anyone else making a harsher
    comment. See?

My Akito just creeps into the "OK, I spose, cos it was cheap" rating.
