You've all lost me, I'm afraid - what's all this "paying" you keep on
    about?

An economic miracle based on the inability to grow potatoes.

It's something we do to make sure you don't have to do it for
    yourself.

If my pension fund fails I'll hunt you down and kill you because it's
    on of your employers products.

If it's done just to boost profits then yes, it's certainly morally
wrong. One could argue it's even worse for your employer to make tens
of millions in profits almost entirely from student fees, rather than
just charging enough to cover their costs.
    FTC?

A company with more than a handful of employees paying into individual
private pension plans would be very unusual. Paying into a *group*
private pension plan (which Ben has now confirmed is the case) isn't
    unusual.

    Temps, you mean.

That's the first thing that popped into my head, but I ruled it out as
TBC's comment makes no sense if that's what he meant. Not having to
treat contractors the same is the whole point of taking them on.

But it's often seen as the ugly face of capitalism, at least by those
that don't recognise that having the choice to earn twice as much as
your permie colleagues and take all the risks involved is _not_ a bad
    thing.

I'd say temps were different because (ime) a temp can be thinned out
at any point without any financial penalties. My company employ a
number of temps over the summer months and I give them as much notice
as possible when work is getting a bit low but they all know I can
finish them the next day if I need to.

Also known as higher salary but none of the fixed contract benefits. I
look on it as being a straight choice (if the choice is there to be
made) between an enhanced salary or a company pension, paid holidays,
    sick pay etc.

I find it very hard to accept tax payers money being wasted on
inflated salaries paid to contractors chasing the big bucks.

    though. :)

I was on a fixed term contract from 2008. My boss managed to get
extended to more than two years, so when they decided not to renew it in
July I even got redundancy pay, as well as a second tiny superannuation
pension. But then that's the public sector.

In practice, the same is very often true of the 'FTC'. At least as far
as the glory days on EKSdom were concerned.
