So... is it normal to be able to rattle the back wheel like this?

A question for the people that have done a few more km than I have....

A couple of days ago I was riding along at 100 kph and I felt
something 'go' on the bike. I stopped and checked it all over but
couldn't find anything. I carried on, more slowly, and ever since
that moment the bike felt 'wrong.' Previously the handling and
suspension was smooth, but now it's a bit clunky with very small (but
detectable) knocks, bumps and clunks. The back wheel appears to skate
around a bit (tyre pressure OK this time). On the way home today
there was a repetative scraping sound that matched the speed the wheel
was going around. Again, I stopped and checked but it all appeared
    fine.

I put the bike up on a paddock stand and, if I use the back brake to
lock the wheel the wheel is solid. If I release the back brake, I can
rattle the wheel on the axle. See the video.

I scratched a line in the dust on the two parts that move to make it
    easier to see.

What is it and how much will it cost? Can I ride it 20 km to the
    dealer?

Something very stuffed there; either collapsed bearing (likely) or
    broken axle (unlikely).
Don't ride it. Take off the back wheel and have a look. (and take the
wheel to a friend or a shop if you're scared)
    Cheers

I thought it had to be bearings.

Sorry about the 1MB video with no titties. Look on the bright side:
if yo pay $60 for 12GB (as I do) 1MB works out at about ½ ¢. So you
should have some spare credit for the rest of this
    evening! ;-) ;-)

    Thanks for confirming it.

No, take back wheel off and take to shop to get new bearing fitted.

Apart from it likely to NOT be a few hundred dollars (get a quote
first then), unless you know what you're doing (you may need to rely
on more than a dubious YouTube vid) you run the risk of buggering up
the new bearing and/or the bearing seat..or just plain killing
<yoursel/next-owner/bike rider coming the other way> later with a dud-
    installed bearing.

  7. Would have been better if you got someone else to hold the camera
when you shake the wheel, the camera shakes twice as much

As has been said, take the wheel out and take it to the shop to get new
bearings fitted, but, when they do that, get them to check inside the wheel
to make sure the broken bearing shell hasn't fucked the wheel

don't quote me... but Honda wheel bearings are going to be about 5
times+ the price as the generic (as good) bearings from the local
bearing place... but saying that, it you don't want to do it yourself,
taking the wheel off, is your next cheapest option

    Wow; that's a good result!

  12. Sounds like a good deal, and he was unsure how to do it, I reckon it
is the way to go. Be nasty to have a bearing seize at 100 km/h.

Agreed, there are a few things you can do wrong with potentially nasty
results. At that price, I'd go for it.

  15. He did have it break on him at 100kph
so he is lucky in more ways than one

The reason I keep on going back to Geoff Taylor Dandenong is a) they
have never treated me like they saw me coming - I've always thought
their charges were reasonable and b) they have never stuffed up a job.

That's sort of a familiar name
Did he race sidecars in the 60's?

    Yup. From the web site...

1964 Australian Victorian Scrambles Champion. Geoff and Barry Fraser
accumulated no less than 11 Australian Road racing Sidecar
Championships, and 11 Australian Grand Prix victories in both the
Junior and Unlimited classes at Bathurst, from 1976 to 1983. No mean
feat in any language. Then, in 1983, at the peak of their racing
career and as reigning Australian Champions, the pair decided to spend
more time with their families so they hung up their leathers for good.

I think I saw him in there once too.

Thought it was a familiar name,
I raced against him quite a few times
If my memory is nearly right, he had a green Yamaha 650 road racing outfit?
