  1. And I bet you drive around all the time with your front fogs on
too. Like all the pathetic wannabe rally drivers that
fondly imagine that doing so makes them look 'cool'..

This rant brought to you by "I've had to stop taking my arthritis
    medicine because it's killing
my white blood cells and I'm getting throat and mouth ulcers"

Heh. No, that actually really pisses me off. Since getting a frog car
I can see (possibly) why, though, as the fog light switch has 3
settings: off, front only or front+rear. And you need to go through
the front-only setting in either direction, IYSWIM.

It was a bad trip in - 2.5 hours instead of a usual 50 mins. However,
my way home included snowboarding so it was pretty good actually.

Bit belatedly, but my tale of Wednesday woe is as follows:

We have been given an order to replace the plant which keeps one of those
huge inflatable indoor tennis courts blown up, quite a big bit of kit with
an electric blower, gas heater and diesel back up blower. I had to plan and
dismantle the quite substantial lighting steelwork inside the tennis courts,
and all this went to plan very nicely on Tuesday (dismantling very heavy
steel tubes from about 4 metres up, plus substantial support posts). On
Wednesday, the plant manufacturers were coming over from Germany, fully
tooled up (or so I thought, as they had surveyed the job) to carry out the
change over of the plant. Having dismantled the lighting we deflated the
tennis court and waited, the weather was perfect (not too cold, no wind)

The germans arrived at lunch time with the new plant on the back of a
flatbed truck equipped with a Hiab. They drove this thing across the lawn
in front of the clubhouse and set up.

1st Problem - the going was a bit soft, and within a few minutes the truck
    was dug in.
2nd Problem - the Hiab wasn't man enough to lift out the old plant and lift
in the new plant with the boom at fuill stretch.

This meant the old plant had to be stripped in situ to enable the Hiab to
lift it out, and the brand spanking new plant (eventually) had to be
stripped and then rebuilt. However, before taking a spanner to the new kit,
the head German decided to call for another, larger crane. This monstrous
thing arrived, the plan being to a) drag out the bogged down German flatbed
and b) lift in the new plant without having to strip it. The behemoth crane
entered the tennis club lawn, and immediately sunk to its axles. The well
maintained garden now resembled a scene from the Somme.

Anyway, to cut a very long, trying story short, new plant was in and both
vehicles were out by 6.00pm just as the snow came down. I cleared site at
6.30pm (Ealing W5) to return to Bicester. All major routes were jammed
solid, and it seemed that nobody had ever encountered snow on the road
before. My route home to Bicester would normally be straight down the M40
and take about 1 hour. On Wednesday I started off on M40, detoured through
Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, Loudwater, Penn, Hazlemere, Kingshill (road
closed due to overturned coach), Hazlemere, High Wycombe, West Wycombe,
Stokenchurch (M40 Closed), past the ER, Thame, Bicester. Eventually arrived
    home at 11.30pm.

What really struck me during my trek was how clueless the vast majority of
drivers are when it comes to icy conditions, either too fast or too bloody
slow, or "I've got a 4x4 (but haven't got a clue how to drive it)". Yes the
roads were bloody slippery, but in all honesty I personally did not have a
single buttock clenching moment caused by the road conditions, only by the
other clueless twats trying (but largely failing) to make any progress.

The journey home on Wednesday was an appropriate end to a very shitty day
    generally.

Alcohol is the drug of choice for arthritis?

Unfortunately not, in fact some say alcohol can exacerbate arthritis. The
drugs I was put on after my stint in hospital in October 2002 eventually
started to bugger up both my white blood cells and liver enzymes, so I
stopped taking them. Luckily the arthritis does not seem to have returned
    with such ferocity.

  15. I wish. I hardly touch the stuff now. The
    side effects are.. unpleasant.

And no - my liver enzymes are OK (at the moment). But my immune
    system isn't :-(

  17. It does. Or at least it does for me.
    Aye. But not liver (yet).
Mine has :-( And it's only a week or so since I stopped
    taking the drugs.

It doesn't affect mine too badly, but a couple of bottles of red wine can
    make my knee ache somewhat
Mine was caught in time (but I was on fortnightly blood tests at the time)
    Bugger :(
