eBay specifically. Can anyone recommend some (free or pirated) software good
for Snipe bidding which doesn't rely on a remote subscription (or %age take)
    server.

I can never see how this gives any more benefit than bidding up to the
very maximum that you're prepared to pay.

Why would you need it - it's not like you've got anything to do during
the day other than snipe ebay auctions ;-)

  5. Stops a potential bidding war which may drive the price higher than you'd
    otherwise pay.

I think bidding wars are simply due to people getting carried away with
bidding on ebay. People should get a grip (and this is coming from a
    regular seller).

  7. Absolutely and I snipe so that my interest isn't known until after the event
and there's no contribution to any bidding war. I always try to ascertain
what the correct price would be before hand.

Personally use Auction Sentry which isn't too bad.

    http://www.auction-sentry.com

Free for 10 days and then a cost of about 9UKP for the registration.

  10. I snipe occasionally and if I get outsniped, I just shrug. I've already
set what I'm willing to pay and if someone else has deeper pockets
that's up to them. Frankly, I'm amazed at what some folk are willing to
pay for used things that can be picked up new for the same or less
    money.

I'm pretty convinced you could make a few bob buying bikes and bike bits
from the local rag and selling them on ebay

  13. Breakers have been doing it for years. Problem is, doing it on a small
scale, you end up with a garage full of scrap bits.
No sooner have you waved the skip lorry goodbye than you find that old
C50 engines are worth a mint.

    Quite.

My guitar fx unit packed up a while ago - I bought a replacement on
    ebay for about 80 quid.

I sold the broken one, for spares and repairs, for 51 quid.....

I'm probably missing something but I'm sure eBay already provides this
service - for free. They operate a proxy-server which bids on your
behalf up to your maximum bid value.

  19. You are missing something.

    Imagine this timeline.

8am No bids. 1ukp opening price.
9am User A: Oh. I want that. Bid 9 pounds. Current "cost" 2ukp
    (assuming 1 ukp increments)
    10am User B: I want that. Bid 10 pounds. "Cost" 10ukp.
10.30am UserA: Bugger. Bid 15 pounds. "Cost" 11ukp.
    11.40am UserB: Arse!. Bid 12.
    11.41am UserB: Arse!. Bid 13.
    11.42am UserB: bugger!. Bid 20. "Cost" 16ukp.
    11.45am UserA: *****! Bid 25.
    ....
12.00 Auction ends. with nice tidy profit for seller...

    Or this one:
8am No bids. 1ukp opening price.
    9am User A:Oh. I want that. Bid 9 pounds. Current "cost" 2ukp
11.50 UserA: Looks like I'm going to get it...
    11.59 UserC: Bid 10 pounds.
12.00 Auction ends, at 10ukp. UserC wins it, by "sniping", for less.

Think of it as late bidding. The later you bid, the later
you are declaring your intention to bid. The earlier you
bid, the higher the price will go. Leaving your bidding
to the last possible moment is called sniping. It's worked
for me in the past; a bid in the last 30 seconds usually
wins it. (I do it manually...) Some people, not chained to
their computers, want a piece of software to do it for them,
which is what Hog is asking for.

    HTH.

I don't like to reveal my interest until the last second though. eBay proxy
and excessive interest (and idiots) are what drive prices up.
