Snapped up a postie!

I went to Fowles on Wednesday and managed to score myself a postie for
$700.00. I'm pretty happy with it - was in the top-half of the bikes
condition-wise, but in the bottom-half price wise. The best ones went
for $950, with the worst going for 650-700. Were about 30 all up.

All I need now are mirrors, a tail-light lens, and a roadworthy. Anyone
know who can do a cheap roadworthy in the SE burbs of Melb? There is a
car place around the corner from me that the VicRoads site says does
bikes - but I bet they want to slug me the standard $75.00 they charge
to do a car. The bike started after only a couple of kicks (even when I
had the choke control back-to-front!), doesn't blow smoke, idles
smoothly, and generally seems to go pretty well. The colour even
    matches the duke ;)

The bike is leaking a little oil out of the gear-shift spindle.
Apparently there is a seal I can replace, but it is unclear how much of
the thing I will need to pull apart to get at it. It looks like the
fine mechanics at AusPost used silicon to seal the spindle to the
crankcase, with the flexibility meaning the little bit of movement in
the spindle is handled. I guess that either this is breaking down, or
it never actually managed to plug the leak, just slow it. I'm
considering giving the hot glue gun a go :) Any clues about that one
    welcome too!

I'm happy that for the first time in my life, I own 2 motor-bikes! My
17 yo daughter is happy too, as she wants to get her bike Ls and ride it
around. On the downside, my fitness is going to go downhill, as I doubt
I will ever walk to the shops again :)

Welldone Mike! That reads like a good Aussie family story. You just gave me
    some ideas for my movie.

If you use hot-glue on the gear selector it will melt again then the casing
heats up. Then it will ooze out. Then it will stick to the first cool thing
    it runs into..

Just the engine side case, generally. Seal should be all of
a fiver, and if you're careful you can reuse the side case
gasket with just a little bit of goo to hold it down.

That's assuming no-one's welded the gearshift lever on :)

Those glue guns get damn hot - I would have expected that the crank
doesn't get hot enough to melt the glue. If the spindle itself doesn't
get hot enough to sizzle water (which it doesn't), I don't think the
    glue would melt.

But yeah, that has gotta be one of my - err - less elegant solutions :)
