My diet choices are not strictly *my* choices FFS. It's a diabetic thing.

What are you doing agreeing with people? You could unbalance my whole
wroldview doing things like that without making it obvious, or posting
your intention in a national daily newspaper, or using the
time-honoured AOLism. And I agreed with you both, in that case.

    Argh.

Read the words again, I wasn't singling you out.

One of the people I used to work with went on a cabbage diet FFS. Isn't
that one of the single most stupid concepts you've ever heard of?

You what? Would you like to point us at some evidence of an
association between a low carb diet and kidney disease?

    That's alright then.
Mmm, I love raw cabbage. Not to keen on it cooked though.

A low (not zero) carb, high protein and lower fat diet is the healthiest
balance according to the most detailed *genuine* research, which is that
undertaken with diabetics (1). That's close to Atkins but not the same
thing. Restrictions in eating fruits and balancing increases in vegetables
and nuts is an important part of the change (for instance). It applies to
    everyone and not just diabetics.

It's not generally mentioned with Atkins but the reason people loose weight
on that diet is tied up with glucose. Carbs convert very quickly to glucose
in the digestion, the insulin response kicks in and those sugars are swiftly
laid down as fat to balance the blood levels. Protein on the other hand is
converted to glucose in the blood via processing by the liver and is a much
slower process. The slow release equates to a rate at which it can be burnt
and a much lower level of insulin response which in turn equates to less fat
    deposit.

Another myth debunked is that eating fat causes high cholestorol, or more
correctly unbalanced cholestorol levels. Completely wrong, it is a result of
excessive glucose production, excessive insulin response and fat deposits
around the middle of the body. There have been long term pure research
trials and also tests done on Antartic explorers surviving on pure
fat/protein diets. Their cholestorol levels were excellent. This was also
found to be the case with Induits before they started to Americanise their
diet. There were no traces of arterial furring and heart dysfunction in
    these subjects either.

All of the research and diet trials were underlined by one over riding
feature however. For a healthy balanced blood chemistry and fat control,
regular aerobic exercise 20-30 minutes a day was essential.
If you have fat deposits around your middle, male or female, but not
elsewhere on the body then you are in a real risk catagory.

Surely you're not recommending a normal, balanced diet?

    How unreasonable.

I had 1st pizza since May last weekend. Pizza Hut Thin with everything. Went
over the limit for an hour or two but not so far that I can't handle it once
a month(ish). It used to be every other day though.

I know (or rather, knew) someone who used to regularly go on a grape and
water diet for a couple of days.

    He's dead now.

Nothing to do with a daft diet idea, mind. It was more the bullet to the
    head that did it.

  20. Pizza makers tend to put quite a bit of sugar in the tomato topping
    stuff. It's rather annoying.
