Small Number Plates - Whats the Score?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Matt E Mulsion, May 25, 2004.

  1. What the score these days with having a small number plate on the back
of your sports bike? I was down in Stratford on Sunday and parked in
the new bike park and couldn't help but notice how pretty much all of
the sports bikes (well about 95% of them) had proper full sized legal
number plates on their rear ends. This made my bike with its 9"x3"
plate stick out like a sore thumb. Has it really become that much of
a taboo thing to have a smaller plate on your bike? Or am I worrying
unneccesarily that if the police wanted to target someone for a
roadside check then they would look at me first?

I was let off on Saturday for doing 77 in a 60, purely because my bike
appeared to be legal. The copper said he would've given me a fixed
penalty if I had an illegal plate. That's a good enough reason for me.

You may not get pulled specifically for a small plate, but you're more
likely to be let off for your "indiscretions" if your bike's legal.

    You look a twat.
This is because the Police walk up an down the bike park in Stratford
issuing tickets for cans and plates.
Looks like it. What's the point anyway?
    Why give them another excuse?

Indeed - keep the full size plate bungeed to the pillion seat until you
arrive, then stick it on the bike.

I've got a 7x5 that looks neat and more or less legal [1]. The character
height is only 14mm short and width is 4mm out, the spacing is otherwise
    correct.

Strictly speaking it's illegal but doesn't look like it's taking the piss
or, more importantly, look like a rear mounted riot shield.

So when it's that little difference, what's the point?

The character size and spacing is not far out but doesn't have a riot
shield for a background. It looks a lot neater.

  13. IIRC the letters "J" and "P" and number 999 appear - however my memory
    may be failing me.
