Slow German server or is it sodding Tiscali?

Andrews & Arnold would get my vote but you may find them expensive:

But then again, if I find I have to talk to an ISPs support, I *really*
need to talk to someone who knows what they're doing above and beyond
    recommending a reinstallation of Windows.

Yes. Last three days particularly bad, between 6-11 pm. Eclipse
technical support are as usual not able to provide useful advice, I am
    thinking of migrating to Be.

migrating, not emigrating. Be is one of the odd UK ISP names.

    How odd.[/QUOTE]
Lucky you. After I posted the above, I could not get a connection to the
news server for about 30 minutes[1]. But when it works, the speed seems
fine. Should it matter which local exchange one are hooked up to?

Is yours an "Evolution" or "Home" Eclipse account?

[1] and when trying to post this, another session of "no contact"
    delayed it again . . .

I assume this is cable rather than ADSL via BT infrastructure?

My connection is reliable(ish) but I cannot get a speed above 2Mb due to
the crappy local infrastructure. BT have a monopoly and any upgrades to the
exchange are a very low priority.

    Yes it's cable.

  11. There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere.

    X-posted to uk.comp.sys.mac

    Anyone?

Not in MacSOUP, that I can find. Also, it requires the news server to
be listening for NNTP on port 80, and that's not guaranteed.

(The ~Documents/MacSOUP/MacSOUP Settings file is 0 bytes at the
command line, but 8k in Finder. Is finder showing the resource fork
size? What can I use to edit resources under OSX? There might be a way
to twiddle the server port in there)

    Cheers - Jaimie

I've been with Virgin (Telewest) for over 7 years - fast and reliable.

  15. I can't find one in MacSOUP's preferences.

On the original question; from here, the German server seems to be
    running full blast.

  17. Ahh. well the option is there in Thunderbird, if TOG wants me to guide
    him through that.
It is with the cheesy server - that's one of their bonus points.

Heh. Where's Stefan when you need him?

(Just upgraded to 2.8.2. I actually thought the problem of MacSoup
'hanging' on connection to the server was a Soup issue. Now I know
    different)

Never tried to fiddle with anything, but if you CTRL-click on the
executable and choose 'show contents of packet' ... and then go into
Contents and you'll see an Info.plist. You might find something in there
(like I say, this hasn't been tested).

I swapped from Pipex to Be There. A few price levels, fast connection,
their customer support staff are active on their forums and take notice
of the complaints that people have. I'm happy with them.
