Slow German server or is it sodding Tiscali?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Nov 18, 2007.

  1. It's geting a PITA to d/l messages from the German server at peak times.
The conenction comes and goes, comes and goes whereas, oddly, the mail
    and web connections work briskly.

Is anyone else having probs with the German server or is this, as I
suspect, Tiscali slashing the bandwidth available to news connections???

Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, The Older Gentleman typed:
Been on this server most of the day. No problems here.

Between news.individual and Tiscali as the cause of any problem, my money
    would be on Tiscali.

I use NIN too, vut through Virgin, and it's fine here.

Tiscali were flaky at the best of times ...

It was affecting the Pipex (now, sadly, owned by Tiscali) connection I
    was using earlier too.

May the fleas of a thousand camels forever infest Tiscali's collective
    groins.

    they're the same bunch now.

    Fucking hell.

OK, new ISP time. Demon, anyone?

I've been with Virgin (NTL) for over 7 years - fast and reliable.

  14. Here's a thought.
Why not sign up for the cheesy server, and see how long it takes to
    download over port 119.

Then do it again, and see how long it takes over port 80.

That, I would think, should confirm your suspicions.

  15. That's probably with it having to go through Echelon first.

I'm on Demon. No complaints - been with them since the village first got
broadband some what, 3 - 4 years ago now. It's gradually been upgraded from
1 to 8mb as well, and got cheaper heh.

  19. sign up for a cheesy server account.

Open macsoup, or thunderbird or whatever you use and enter the settings.

First time, use port 119 (normal).
Second time, use port 80 (internet) - this should be configurable in the
    server settings of your newsreader.
