Same way many others did: read a/the manual, grab a spanner, and have
    a go.

Maybe, I think it's more basic than that though. People not wanting to
know what the whizzy bits do, more because of their generaly lazy
    outlook on life.
Sort of like giving a mobile phone to a new born baby then, it doesn't
    know, it doesn't care.

Dear me, it must be wonderful to never have to ask questions. It's all very
well suggesting that someone should just run along with a Haynes book and a
socket set, but it's not called the Book of Lies for nothing.

Nick may be far from a technical whizz-kid, but at least he's interested in
gaining some know-how. I fail to see why sniping at his asking questions is
necessary. His questions may seem very basic to some, but at least he's
    asking.

Not what I'm saying at all. Asking questions is a good thing.
Quite.. I'm sure Nick is able to ask the people he thinks have some
know-how directly if he doesn't get the answers he wants on the NG. We
were not painting a big red sign around Nick for asking questions,
rather talking in more generic terms... well, I was anyway.

My mistook - apologies to you and Muck. I've not been following every post
in this thread and last ones I'd seen had seemed a bit snippy, so thought
you were following on specifically rather than generally.

More often the other way round - have a go, realise you need a
spanner, break everything you touch, then rtfm.

    Certainly was true in my case :-}

I was trying to be helpful.

I have the remnants of a TS185 in the garage as a reminder of the
consequences of doing it the wrong way round.

It doesn't? Well, it sounds like an increase in revs and a loss of
drive, which ties in quite nicely with clutch slip (tho my first guess
    was a jump into neutral).

What does it sound like to you?

I would have read it as the inverse of that, given a)the context and
    b) the overall lack of understanding demostrated by the OP.

You're quite right, but given the general lack of understanding of the
other poster, as Ace says, I read the "suspension unload" comment to
be the opposite of what we both think it ought to mean. IYSWIM :)

In fact, clutch slip at a constant speed is pretty unlikely anyway,
    wouldn't you have said?

    It's a queer one.

It's only a twin, so if it was only running on one it would be pretty
    obvious I'd have thought.

During its final days, the old clutch on the Wing would slip whilst
    using the cruise control.
