What a wonderful biking road. South of San Francisco Skyline Blvd. winds along the tops of the Los Altos and Saratoga hills through some gorgeous countryside, with twisty and not-so twisty sections and a selection of decent roads available on both sides, going down to the coast on 84 or 9. Anyone here ridden it, or ride it regularly? -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) \`\ | /`/ GSX-R1000K3 `\\ | //' BOTAFOT#3, SbS#2, UKRMMA#13, DFV#8, SKA#2 `\|/` `
Nope. It's squid central on the weekends. The cool thing about Northern California is that there are a ton(ne) of great roads to choose from. So I ride elsewhere. -- Michael
I drove it yesterday in my cage, hauling three of my friends down to a party in Bear Creek. It had been raining, so I was driving at reasonable speeds. Lots of corners had biggish rocks that had fallen from up on high. Then when I saw the mud flowing across the road, I was damn glad I was in my cage instead of on my bike. That would not have been pleasant. So on any hilly or mountainy road during or after a rain, be the hell careful! (And ride with your brights on during the day.)
Yeah, I was there in a cage[1] yesterday too, although I missed the mudslides I saw later on the news. Aye, lots of quite dark sections, a bit like the Black Forest roads near where I live. But don't all bikes over here have their lights permanently on anyway? [1] Bloody awful big Ford (a "500", whatever that means). Some power, but just a Low/Drive auto box, so effectively no gear control whatsoever, and as wallowy as hippo in mud. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Better yet, they missed you! Yes, they do, but there's no guarantee that the dims are visible at any distance. My friend has a bloody awful big Dodge with dualllies in back and a Cummins (big rig truck) diesel engine with a pack valve. When he lets off the gas, a valve between the exhaust header and pipe closes, compressing the air in there with an effective braking force of something like -120 hp. It was really embarrassing following him down hills ... he'd just let off the gas (err, I mean Diesel) on that thing, and I'd have to shift my little Honda into a higher gear! (If he's not going to step on his brakes to control his downhill speed, then neither the hell am I. So there!)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That was my old stompin' grounds from 75-86. I went back there for WSB with a fellow "zoner" in 2002 and he thought he'd died and gone to heaven. We did Alice's two week days before the Superbike races at Seca, We also did lots of other Santa Cruz/ Penn roads a well, Besides 35, 84 both ways, 9 to Santa Cruz, Stage rd.Bonnydoon, Empire grade, parts of 1, & that Great basin park Rd, besides the one near our Motel in Gilroy connecting 101 to 1. Too little time thought to show my friend some of my old East Bay haunts, like Niles, Palomaris canyon, Redwood Rd, & Skyline to Berkeley, not to mention Mines rd or Calivavis rd. Maybe I'll be back this summer. Lane splitting down 1 to Monterey and 17 back into SJO was a blast too. This is the one my work colleagues in the SF office keep threatening to take me on next time I'm over there. Sounds worth doing after all!
Aye, it is that. 'Course, it would have been better if I'd been on two wheels, not four... -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) \`\ | /`/ GSX-R1000K3 `\\ | //' BOTAFOT#3, SbS#2, UKRMMA#13, DFV#8, SKA#2 `\|/` `

And some up north of the Bridge that are farm/ranch roads, in the truest sense, in that they see little to no traffic on weekends! The area shall reamain nameless, those who know, know.
Bob, thanks for the pics. Brings back memories. I lived at the bottom of Moody Road in Los Altos, used to ride Skyline to connect miles of very nice mountain bike trails. Between the "gutter bunnies" (i.e Road bikers) squids and cruisers it was alway an interesting ride. Just north of Page Mill, on the mountain bike I saw a mountian lion, cool, until I realized I could be dinner. And the poison oak on the trails was ABSOLUTE EVIL. Give me a cool million and I'd move back in a minute. You can buy a big house anywhere, but you can't buy climate. That is why the Bay Area is soooo expensive. Bryan And the Brookdale Lodge had a great Sunday Brunch. I miss NoCal.
CA State highway 35. A very nice road, but for the traffic. I've lived almost my entire life within easy reach of it. One of my favorite memories of learning to ride a motorcycle is up there, on a late summer day. Bright sun, blue sky, but so dark among the redwoods that I could see my headlight illuminating the pavement. Al Moore DoD 734
Nice ride. 35 itself is pretty easy. Best riding is some of the goatpaths running off of 35. Best ridden in cooler weather when the squids and Harleys aren't out. Worst time to ride is in the fall when it's full of clueless flatland folk buying pumpkins and Christmas trees.
Yeah, seems everyone does, unfortunately. I used to ride it quite a bit in the early-mid '90s when I first moved to the Bay Area, Now, too many damn [arrogant] bicyclists and squids and deer and cops. If you make it to Portland, Oregon, they have a nice Skyline Blvd there.
Nah, that's our defence against tourists. I used to know some people who lived on Moody Road. They had what was probably the last running Stanley in the area. You couldn't buy a shack on Moody Rd for a million. Not any more. They still do. Al Moore DoD 734
Looks like it, yes, but the views a bit obscured by some ugly lump of metal in the foreground. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) \`\ | /`/ GSX-R1000K3 `\\ | //' BOTAFOT#3, SbS#2, UKRMMA#13, DFV#8, SKA#2 `\|/` `
Squids? You're about the fourth person to mention them. WTF is a squid? -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) \`\ | /`/ GSX-R1000K3 `\\ | //' BOTAFOT#3, SbS#2, UKRMMA#13, DFV#8, SKA#2 `\|/` `
Absolute evil isn't the poison oak, it's the ticks, especially when you discover one attached in a deeply personal place and your SO won't even kiss it to make it better.
