Why do we need ID cards now anyway?

Mr Tony Bliar told us quite adamantly that with Saddam Hussein taken out the
world would be a safer place.

So bearing in mind that he is now banged up after an illegal war waged on
him [1], we can all sleep so much easier now knowing that we are perfectly
safe, and that our newly elected gubmint is looking after us so well.

So, the need for ID cards has been removed.

    Or...

Am I being a tad sarcastic and cynical?

They're unlikely to be universal and compulsory for another 10 years,
assuming they ever work. That could easily be after humanity has reached a
    technological singularity

so what do you think's more likely to go spontaneously sentient first,
    MSDN or Google Accelerator?

Google Accelerator plus Delicious Monster plus RFID. It will be able to see
into your home, catalogue all your belongings, follow you in and out of
every public building and see all your web traffic. Its first glimmer of
self-awareness will be when it starts spontaneously doing all your shopping
    for you.

Last time I used it, MSDN looked like it had as much chance of becoming
    sentient as a tree

Now that is a *very good* point.

but I doubt it would be the case.
