I've now got this picture of hundreds of black and white shirts
    marching through Newcastle chanting "Tsunami".

If it's any consolation one of Jessica's schoolfriends (a Thai lad who
she's a bit sweet on) was OK; we've only just found out and he gets back
sometime today. They were in the Phuket area staying with family.

  4. y - and
    tú - you/your etc
    tocar - touch
    las - the (plural feminine)
    de - of
    también - also

So for someone who speaks un poco español, it looked very close.

    I withdraw my suggestion.

  6. I loved the description by Michael Buerk of Bob Geldof speaking to
Ethiopian Dictator Mengistu. "When everyone else walked around Mengistu
in fear, Bob walked right up to him and said: You're a ****!"

  7. Muchisimas gracias. Pero, no es la verdad.
No, but I did try to read "Just like that" by Tommy Cooper. It was
awful. Currently reviewing "Heebie Jeebies - The Simpsons". I'll let you
    know.

Far be it for me to suggest its in any sense a vacuous political &/or media
gesture to convey the impression of something meaningful which is actually
    of no value but ................

I dunno, for armistice day it works, there's a focus a point to it, its
about remberance. But this. What's the point? What's to remember? - Take a
fkn surf board next time you head east? Bollocks, all of it. I'm very
saddened at what's happened to the people and communities actually affected.
But this 3 minutes silence is sick, tacky, offensive and fucked if I'll
dignify it with any sort of observation.

I'm sure something needs angle grinding but what? What'll resonate best?

Why rant about it? Just ignore it and go about your usual business.

Quite how you can describe 3 minutes of silence as "sick" and "offensive",
I just don't know, let alone find the words to write a whole paragraph
    slagging it off.

There are times when remembering, by a collective silence, people who
made great sacrifices or personal contribution are appropriate and a
    /good/ thing.

This 3 minutes is, as someone has said, maudlin tripe which undermines
    and devalues the meaningful silences.

Before long we'll be witness to pathetic antics at the Cenotaph.

    When is it?

You can see the difference, I can see the difference. However, IMO its
the thin end of the wedge.

Which is the undermining of the relevance and watering down the status of
a collective silence. With more silences of 'remeberance', many of which
are likely to be little more than "maudlin tripe", they'll blur into a
    one in the national comprehension.

Throw in many people have the attention span of a gnat and the important
    ones may be lost.

Charity records could be seen as a reasonable precedent. Or even house
make over shows; what started as a good idea is done to death.

  19. The worst silence I know of is the one used by your SO when you've
blotted your copybook, but don't know how, and she won't tell you.
