OK, OK, I've given some money (it's charidee, but I don't like to talk
    about it, mate).

    I sympathise. I really do.

But just *what* is the point of a three minute silence? Eh? What *is*
the fucking point? Is it supposed to make us feel like we've done
something useful for the poor cunts?

I shall be holding a three minute
    doing-whatever-the-****-I-was-going-to-be-doing-anyway. Call it my
little tribute, if it makes you feel better.

  2. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

Sorry mate, couldn't hear you; I was doing my 3-minute Kangoing.

You're early then. Save it for Wednesday, when we will (apparently) be
observing an Official Mark Of Respect.

There are certain periods of silence that I choose to observe. In this
time I think about the event being remembered and how it affected me
and those I know. Although this isn't the only time of year that I
    think about these events.

If the particular event has no relevance to me then I may still choose
to remain silent at this time in order to respect others around me that
may wish to observe the silence.

Likewise I sympathise, but as you rightly imply: A load of old shite.

    Too right...

I also wonder who decides how long each silence is going to be, and who
"deserves" one. You know, 1 Ken Bigley = 1000 Europeans = 100,000 Asians
    ?

In fact, that might be an interesting use of the newly effective Freedom
    of Information Act

Thank goodness - I was beginning to think I was the only one who objects to
this crap. As far as I am concerned, I am willing to engage in an act of
rememberance for people who I knew or for people who have sacrificed their
lives in order to protect my values and way of life - but the victims of
this disaster do not fall into either category. I am also concerned about
inflation - if the 400.000 British (and 40,000,000 world-wide) casualties of
WW2 currently only get 2 minutes then their tribute will have to be
increased proportionally. That means at least 6 minutes silence for the
British casualties alone and 10 hours if we want to honour the lot!

I have donated to the relief fund but I don't feel that I am entitled to
pretend that I have any personal involvement in the grief of relatives or
genuine friends. How long will it be before some kind of shrine is set up
and those fucking teddy bears start appearing?

    I didn't - I rather like the idea.
Quite. Although I have to say, it seems to me a colossal waste of
charitable time, money and effort to continue to try and sustain life
year after year in some lands (e.g. swathes of northern Africa) where
    life simply is not sustainable.

ITYWF, it was Mitch Benn (on the Now Show - which also has P&D) which
    rang that particular bell.

Try getting a class of 33 7 year olds to understand why they have to stand
    for 3 minutes in silence.
I don't understand all these silences. WE seem to have had a few this year,
for any event on the news. I think its because the boss says that we should
do it and we're all too scared to say no.
Well bollocks, my NYR for 2005 is to ignore 'silences'. My class will sing
an appropriate song for each event. That gives me 1 day to teach them
    'surfing USA'.

    our silence.
