Gun Gum is not in itself very strong. The Quicksteel stuff Pip and Loz refer
to should hold Space Shuttle wing tiles on.

Right. This I know, having used both. But for a tape-wrapped rotten
silencer repair, it seems to me that the former would be perfectly
good enough and likely to last just as long as the latter.

I'm interested to learn if I'm wrong about this, and why.

Er I've used gum years ago and it fell of after a few days is all I can say.
I was young and eager, probably didn't prepare the surface very well.

    That's a comforting recommendation.

Comforting, but expensive. Have you seen the price of space shuttle tiles
lately? And why exactly would you want to glue them to your exhaust
system? It may not do you any good anyway. You only need a bit of fuel
tank insulation to fall away when you're next doing Mach 3 and it'll punch
right through the tiles and you'll be toast.

    I'll get my coat...

  7. 'Swot I thought, but I bunged a big gob of it onto my old CD175 pipes
(which were also rotting from the inside out) and it lasted for a couple
    of years.

A fiver a tube from your local car parts emporium. It's currently
holding the CB250RS exhaust together, and has got the bike through 2
    strict MOTs.

Any of the,"Liquid Metals" from B&Q.If hole is big then any bit of
Coke can cut with good Scissors(don't tell the missus or your Mam)
    that you used them.
    PS
Just tried some,"JB-Weld" Yankee stuff.£4.99 for two tubes. No better
than any £2.99 loctite or any other brand.Typical Yanks. All bollocks
    and hype.

So your saying it's basically shite if you have to rely on it for your
    life.

    I'll get my EVA suit..........................

I think it was on Mon, 23 Aug 2004 17:25:34 +0100 that "'Hog"
Gun Gum has a tendancy to shrink a bit when it gets hot which is a bit
of a disadvantage for a product that's supposed to repair exhaust
    systems.

I've used it to get cars through the MoT (with a bit of oil can
jubilee-clipped around the bodge) but after a week or so it usually
starts blowing again, but then again after passing the test you've got
another 12 months to sort it <G>

Not tried any of the chemical metal type products yet, but I think the
expansion box (or whatever it's called) on my Virago is getting a bit
thin/rusty so I may need to experiment for next year's test.

Thanks for that info, I thought that the Virago exhaust was a one
piece £400 jobbie only available from Yamaha. I'll have to go Googling
    for suppliers.

  14. I didn't know that. It's always a sign of a crappy component if the
pattern manufacturers reckon it's worth their while tooling up to make
    copies.

The rear downpipe is usually the first to go on these. You can get
    pattern ones as well.
