Just noticed a hole in the silencer on the 400/4 wot I'm flogging to
Blaney next week and was thinking of patching it up so's he can get it
through the MOT when he gets home on it.

    So, two question:

Is ye olde 'Holts Gun Gum' still the best tool for the job?

Will such a repair be acceptable for the MOT test?

Any exhaust paste should do. Cut up a beer can and jubilee clip it round the
    repair to be sure.
Yes. Done it lots of times.

Ace vaguely muttered something like ...
I dunno the technical wording, but if you can pull it off, it shouldn't be
good enough and should fail an MOT. If you try to pull it off and it won't
come, and still doesn't allow leakage then it'll be OK and should pass the
    MOT .. ;)

Cheers Cammo - I thought it would still be the case but it's nice to
    be sure.

Wot about that liquid metal in a tin that Loz/nigeel/other always rave
about. Gun Gum is a bit iffy.

I've used ordinary car body filler in the past.

    Bathroom sealer.

If its a big hole (bigger than a 1p piece) small sheet of aluminium stuck
    on with bathroom sealer.

Bathroom sealer is the stuff of Gods.

    Dunnit melt though?

Yeah, all right, I could see it working for the back end of a can, which
isn't that hot but I would think twice about using it anywhere near the
    pipes.

  16. It's all the same sort of stuff, anyway. Those aluminium epoxy mixes are
    the utter bollocks.

This will save me emailing you. I've ordered a new silencer from
David Silver. They reckon they can get it to my parents' place by
Friday (I leave early doors Saturday morning). I asked them to also
    send all associated items.

So, we should be okay. <fingers crossed>

    On Mon, 23 Aug 2004 20:10:06 +0100,
Wondered about that, but it's rotted on the underside of the silencer
where the remaining metal seems to be about .001" thick, so I didn't
think there'd be much left to key it onto, IYSWIM. Wouldn't it tend to
just cause a bigger bit to vibrate free round the edges.

Anyway, I got the Gun Gum (tape) last night so I'll give it a whirl
    later on.

Oh, OK. I'll hold off the repair then. If it doesn't arrive, let me
know on Friday and I'll do it before you arrive.

In what way? Given that it's specifically aimed at silencer repair I'm
not sure how it could be "iffy".

I was only really trying to work out if it's been supereceded since I
last used it about twenty years ago.
