Should wearing a helmet be optional for motorcycle riders? OVER the age of 21

Discussion in 'Motorcycle Racing' started by Cayla, Jul 3, 2003.

  1. Ya know, when I was bouncing and rolling along the pavement after
being thrown off my scoot at 65 miles per hour, my head hit the ground
many times. The full face helmet was totally scraped on the right side
toward the front and down over the chin bar. Not only do I beleive that
the helmet saved my life, it also prevented my face from being ripped off.
    As always, YHSMV.

Hell, I carry the Doner Card[1] anyway! BUT 1st thing I did after winning my
get-back-on-two-wheels bike on Ebay (TYVM!) was buy a new, expensive,
    all-the-approvals helmet - if I want to run-what-I-brung I'll need it, after
all, and I make my living and feed/clothe/house my kids with the couple of
pounds of grey goo inside my skull. Rather like leathers for preserving my
skin at the cost of the cow's skin ;o)

I *love* my max so far - although I haven't had time for it to turn around
and bite me on the bum yet! OK, it doesn't handle like a 2000 AD +
sportsbike, more a 70's jap four but more so, but I *like* 70's jap fours!

Stripe-faced and burrowing, wild badgers are known for their single-minded
pursuit of prey and bad temper when interrupted. Because off their combative
and belligerent nature, few creatures bother them. When kept as pets,
badgers, though relatively docile, tend to be aggressively intolerant of
    abuse

Imagine how you would feel if you killed a biker wearing a helmet who,
if driving a car, would have suffered no injuries.

It's a very reasonable price. BUT, the question is should you be allowed to
    force me to wear it!

  12. No, you're right, I might have just lost my nose and all my teeth,
and spent 2 months in a hospital, rather than getting up and running
over to the bike to shut it off.

This was just a typical "lost the front end suddenly" kind of fall,
like you might have with wet leaves and a manhole cover. (It was
my own fault, but it was that kind of fall).

I love reading these posts...they really give me an idea of what kinds
of topics are on the minds of riders. But ultimately, I see a lot of
back and forth, especially on the topic of helmet(law or otherwise),
and not too many people give up there position on the subject. I say,
on this particular topic, let those who are anti-helmet ride without
them...they'll be the one to pay.

    Just my 2 cents...

We're not anti helmet. We're anti "some douche

The answer to the "Subject" question in this state is that it is OPTIONAL,

but for riders & passengers 18 and over.

Seems like a simple enough law to understand for most people here.

As far as reading these post? I think most suck, but you are right, just
    like

you most people will never change their position, but enough try to

convince the others that THIER position IS the right one.

If there were a vote and it didn't suceed as you expect, what would your
    guarantee produce in return?

While you are voting on seat belts and helmets, you'll have to vote away
insurance requirements as well, because the folks who vote away safety
measures will see premiums they may not be able to afford. There's one
hand washing the other here, but the economic considerations are
    enormous.

  19. A hell of a lot more than 1/64" of skin and 1/8" of skull will!

I'd sure rather have that fiberglass and foam take the initial
skidding and bouncing than m'heed! I submit that skidding along on
m'noggin at 65 mph would tend to be a bit worse than skidding on
fiberglass. If you think not, than you've obviously slid a might too
    far on yer own hat-rack!

For every one you know who is, there are thousands who've been there
and done that and are only here now because of the lid.
To *some* degree, to be sure.
Of course not. But I'll bet you wear them while riding. Is your toe
    more important than your head?

pages and pages of shit to cover that we can't get to with all this
