Think it's a reasonable bet most new riders drop their first bike.
Fritz's hit the ground a few times.. like the time I forgot the stand
before I got off .. a couple of minor stacks .. if he had fairings I'd
have paid a ton in repairs. As it is he has a cracked front fender and
scuffed housing behind the gear lever ..

Looks like Victoria is going to fall into line with most of the rest of
the country and implement LAMS sometime in the next 12 months. Believe
the P:W and CC restrictions will be the same as NSW.

Certainly did - several times, mostly at low low speed or stopped in my
driveway <blush>. Yeah, I'm unco... Curled the clutch lever and the brake
lever, but nary a scratch on the fairing. Even my acrobatic
    over-the-bars-and -down-the-road-with-bike-following-close-behind didn't do
more than scuff the fairing a bit (although the front wheel guard was
    split.)

Ah, that was a robust little bike..... It was a 97 model, I think - perhaps
they made em tougher back then <grin> - my '06 Suzuki's fairing fared less
well (but still not too badly) after falling from a stop.

Just tell her she has to pay for any repairs!!!

The write-off after my crash was more to do with the big knee-shaped dent in
the petrol tank and squashed exhaust than fairing damage....
Agreed. I think a bit of paranoia doesn't go astray either!

All the best for happy bike-hunting!

Ah, well...there is a good reason for that.

The various schools that have contracts for areas from the RTA seem to
think that instructors will do a bloody hard job more or less for the
    love of it.
When the pre-learners course was started, the RTA supplied each school
with a fleet of bikes, varying in size and style, and the instructor got
to pick machines for each pupil, based on size and history.

I believe that the schools now get their own bikes. A couple of years
ago, HART used CB250s and some SL230s.

Other schools may have gone for cheaper machines.

Were you given the Daelim 'cos you're a shortarse too, or was that what
    everyone got?
    Fair enough! :)

....but definitely don't do anything rash before she has done the course.

After two half days, she'll have a better understanding of possible
comfort factors, and the disadvantages of weight.

If your legs reach the ground with your knees straight, whilst standing,
    they're the right length.

Hasn't happened in WA. Not even being mentioned in the local motorcycle
    columns.

  10. That's all they had. I did beg the instructor to let me use his Ninja, but
for some strange reason he wouldn't let me :-/

  11. Not even worth the obligatory "treefiddy."

Not available new in Australia any more, but here's some info from the UK:
    http://www.cruisermotorcycles.co.uk/daelim.htm

Their selling price of £1982 compares favourably to the $4995 retail price
    here when they were available.

Handlebar basket & bar-end tassles would've been optional extras ;-)

Oh, yes. The daelims were considerably cheaper.

There is also the size issue.

For a complete learner with no prior experience of motorcycles, even a
CB250 can be quite a daunting lump of machinery.

If I was picking a fleet for a school, I'd certainly get a few of those
Madasses or perhaps Munsters, especially for smaller folk.

Well, would the first part of the course been much fun with a Ninja?

Walking about wheeling them soon gives you an appreciation of weight.

If you are going to do it, do it right... Clip ons, rearsets, Lyta
tank, bored, big carbs, big spanny, ported all to hell...

(Yes I do know where there is one like that, and it can get along damn
    well for a 40yo 175)

Oh yeah. My first 125 looked a little like that. The purple paint
job I gave it would be frowned upon even by me these days!
I had a big carb, not carbs, as I really would not know what to do
with the extra one. Fun times were had by all..... :)
I think in the family archives somewhere, there is still a piccie
of me monowheeling the little thing!
Got a photo? I love old bikes still on the road. Three years ago
I saw an AJS parked in Woolies in Mandura. Clip-on's, side pipes.
    What a machine!

No, no photos of Phil's bikes. Ol' Silver has been laid up in the
shed for a while, can't recall why. Needed a new piston I think.

If he wants to ride a tiddler sportbike he rides his hand build 250 Goldie
that isn't so much a replica as a bike the factory forgot to make.

Nice. I have talked myself into building an oldie this year.
Well, two I think. An old thumper of some sort would
be nice, and for some bizarre reason yet not understood,
I always wanted to own a Suzie 750 water kettle.
