It was reported as two hang glider pilots being shot. One was at the
site and had just landed. The other (Dan Murphy) had just arrived on
his motorcycle (F650GS) and was shot in the face. Dan is on life
support at SF General and is judged to have
non-survivable/non-repairable brain injuries. The other pilot is in
stable condition with several gunshot wounds.

Details are still coming out, but the current story is that Dan had just
ridden up, turned off the bike, opened his flip up helmet, then the
shooter walked up and shot him with a .22 below the cheek, up into his
brain. Accounts differ as to whether a conversation preceded the
shooting. Some witnesses say that Dan fell to the ground, helmet still
on, where the shooter shot him again in the chest. The shooter then
shot the other pilot twice, then himself.

You can find news reports at the SF Chronicle website. Search on
    "Funston".

Dan is a long time BMW motorcycle rider in the SFBayArea. He worked for
several years as a mechanic at San Jose BMW, before it was purchased by
CC Products. He especially liked doing a Death Valley ride each spring.

He is going to be missed by many in the hang gliding community and the
motorcycle community. I'm going to miss him. There will be a gathering
at Fort Funston this Saturday at sunset.

    Please, no pro/anti gun flames.

Will someone please bring a flower for me? I'm not sure I knew Dan
Murphy, but the name is familiar. I have soared Ft. Funston several
times, and ridden my bike down from the city many, many times.

I'll be there in spirit. I can't really think of anything else to say
about this random incident. It's just horrible.
