Shims

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Philip Las Gourgues, May 19, 2006.

  1. Hi Everyone,

    I'm going mad chasing some 13mm (or 1/2") I.D. x 0.5mm (or 1/64") shims.
I need them to space some bearings so I'm not even too worried about the
thickness. Anything less than 1mm and more than 0.1mm would be fine but
around the 0.25-0.5mm would be perfect. If it works out 28mm (1-1/8")
would be ideal for the O.D.

Anyway I've chased every bearing shop, engineering shop and a few
motorbike shops but can't find anything at all. During some searching on
the web I found that suspension shims should be available in the right
size but haven't had any luck yet.

Does anyone have any ideas where I could get these from? If they're
available in Brisbane that would be great but I'm so frustrated I'd get
them ordered from Siberia at the moment. The only place that has even
been able to help is a laser cutting place but I'm not paying $60 for 10
washers that should be a few cents each.

Any help would be much appreciated,

    Phil

I have to say, these shim things get a bit of a mention on this NG, but what
    the hell are they?
I've never needed to what they are until now and I'm sure I could live my
whole life happily without ever knowing, but curiosity is getting the better
    of me.
Anyone? (I appreciate that I could google or wiki it, but I prefer the
    aus.moto explantion please)

Try Blackwoods industrial supply , you should be able to get sheet shim
material in brass or steel .

  15. As said before, they're basically washers used for spacing. You can
also get Shim that are "layered" (sort of lamenated), basically you
peel the layers off until you have the desired width. There is an
other type of Shim but you don't normally find them in hardware stores
and they're no good for spacing. :)

  20. Yeah, I thought about making my own. I can even buy the shim plate from
heaps of places but how do you cut a concentric washer? I thought a hole
saw would be pretty like to make a mess of 0.5mm sheet and laser cutting
is way too expensive for such a small run.

    Thanks,

    Phil
