Shim rant...

    Bah, shims haven't arrived yet so it'll be another day without my bike.
    Screw and locknut valves are definitely less painful. No leaving the
    cams out for days waiting for shims.

    Out of curiosity, on multi cylinder bikes - where it's impossible to
    have all valves closed simultaneously - how do you fit the cams and set
    the timing? I imagine it would be quite hard to do with some lobes
    trying to open valves as you fit them and line up the timing marks.

    Hydro tappets are definitely less painful!

    At a articular timing point there's not so many to squash down.

    And on a three cylinder bike, there's also not so many to check :)

  7. That's why you have two... bikes, that is.
    Method favoured here at IK Labs... mark camchain with a texta.

    As for some of the valves always being open, that's why you tighten the cam
    caps down in that criss-cross pattern indicated in the workshop manual...
    looks horribly lopsided going down, but once it's all back together and the
    starter's thumbed, in doesn't fly apart, so it must've worked.

    Smugness borne of past fuckup...

    The RGV is sitting next to it, halfway through a topend.
    The GPX is dead ;-(
    Not much use when the chain slips teeth on the crank cam drive sprocket.
    Imagine that false sense of security as you crank it through a few
    cycles with a big fuckoff torque wrench ;-)
    Yeah this is how I figured it would be done.

    So chalk up another reason to dangle a spanner from the chain by a length of
    twine...

    Also, on the ZX6, for one, the cam drive gear on the crank sits over a ridge
    in the lower crankcase which prevents the camchain coming off the gear's
    teeth... the only way the chain's going to jump teeth is if you split the
    cases.

    Heh I wish. No. The bike got "defected", and I was gonna just sell it
    on ebay as is, but he struck an arrangement with me whereby he would get
    it back on the road (and rider it) in exchange for a 50% equity stake.
    Fair nuff. Long story short, the engine has since seized (lunched
    gearbox by the look of it) hence it's near worthless and no-one has yet
    bothered to list it on ebay.
    Yeah. Learned that the hard way ;-)

    That's a nice design, I like that. The Austrians aren't so nice
    unfortunately.

  12. Can't look at it. My server here thinks that the ...:port # format of the
    URL means that I'm trying to do a port scan and stops me.
    They've been doing it for yonks. My 1990-model ZXR250 had the same
    arrangement.
    Could always have something to do with their motor only revving half as high
    as the ones Kawasaki build.

    ....and that does look like it'd be a bit of a bastard to work on. Wonder if
    the top tube would get in the way of a torque wrench when the time comes to
    tighten down the cam caps.

    The buckets are off the valves there, yeh, Jules?

    Certainly does. I shall be dork-torquing it without doubt. But all in
    all it's quite a nice bike to work on. Easier than the GPX or R6,
    without doubt.
    Yep. It's a shim over bucket setup.
    I don't know of many 650 singles revving much higher than 8000rpm!

    And as long as Aaron is in the mood for duplicating my images, here's

    As you know, it's the same here. To dodge this excessively paranoid
    behaviour, set your browser for "connect directly to the Internet" (or
    similar). Don't forget to set it back afterwards, or you'll have a visit
    from the data-traffic police :)

  18. Turns out I'm a pick for getting everyone's (!) hopes up then dashing them
    by pulling apart the system that was the IP addy. :)

    You can all relax however. It'll be up sometime in the not too distant
