And it wouldn't hurt to change the oil and filter halfway between service
intervals, especially between the 500 mile one and the first service. Lots
of lovely tiny metal filings came out of mine after 1,500 miles. I was glad
they weren't in there for another 2,000 miles before I took it in.

My VFR800i has 8k mile minor / 16k mile major intervals.

With any luck I'll be able to get away with the 32k valve clearance
check for another year as I think that might be a tad expensive.

4k for the GS[1] and anything built to modern pass modern califnian
specs, cruisers particularly, can be as low as 2k for the older ones.

[1] It was derived from a 750, I do wonder if the same sorts of service
requirements are the same but I don't know what 750 it was derived from.
I assume it was one of Mr Suzuki's finest 750's but in this day and age
    one can never be sure.

Now I do seriously wonder about the validity of this particular one.

Yeah, all right it was almost the holiest of holy mantras when I were
nowt burra lad but these days with all your high quality laser
controlled engineering and super high tech oils is it really necessary?
    Magnits. ykims.

The Kawasaki is 6,000km, though the manual gives mile equivalents
    (4,000)
I've seen the Z750 (not the S) pre-reg with free UK delivery for £3995.
That might make it worth paying for the first service yourself...

I thought it was because the oil would be full of the chipped off bits
    of metal.

Yes but materials technology has improved more than just oil, the metal
and the filters have come on a bit too.

I am not for a moment suggesting that half distance oil changes aren't A
Good Thing. I are just asking if perhaps it's time as a thing worth
    doing might not have passed.

My Golf gets a service every 30K miles. That reminds me, the service
indicator keeps telling me to book it in within 1400 miles.

    I haven't lost my mind, it's
backed up to a floppy disc
    that's around here somewhere.

    Very well filtered.

When I worked on the class 59 locos in the early nineties they'd never
had an oil change since their introduction in 1985. Some major oil
filters on them and regular oil sampling though.

Did they change the filters themselves, though?

I don't think it matters how wonderful the oil is. The fact remains that
there are loads of abrasive bits of metal held in the oil. I would rather
get them out of the engine than leave them whizzing around for another 2,000
    miles.

Hmm, I suppose that could work. Big magnet in the filter cartridge...

But given the relative cheapness of engine oil and the relative laziness of
me, I'd just change it for new stuff.

Only because they gave you a van FOC. Or was it despite the fact they
    gave you the van?
