  2. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
The German defenses were pretty effective at detecting incoming attacks
and routing fighters/alerting flak crews to the incoming raids and that
was with them having to guess what the target for tonight was in any
    case.
To have an extra element of forewarning would probably have worked in
their (the Germans) favour. Mind you, I'm not sure how much of a lead
the real Pathfinders worked on, so perhaps there's something to be said
    for your idea.

What we need is a giant sim.

I agree but that is both too obvious and opening up for a much
broader discussion that we could spend weeks at. I'll just say
that the war against fascist Italy was just as total, the only difference
was the relative lack of important targets.
Many moons ago I read a rather in depth book by one of the
war time "boffins" that was at the center of this development.
As far as I remember it the latest equipment was handed to
crack RAF units (with much worry about and arrangements
to prevent the kraut getting their hands on it). The emphasis was
very much on the problems of night navigation and the septics
were IIRC hardly mentioned. I guess they got hold of it, but
    probably with a considerable delay.

Amiens indeed. The Resistance got in touch and said the Nazis
were going to shoot everyone in the prison, so the RAF went and
    opened up the walls.
    http://www.raf.mod.uk/history/amiens.html

And they did a similar thing to Gestapo HQ in Copenhagen.

The Amiens raid and the Saumur Tunnel raid
    http://www.raf.mod.uk/bombercommand/saumur.html
(with liberties taken with the facts) form the basis of the film
    "Mosquito Squadron".

  5. Good stuff that.
I Like this from the Mossie page

'An example of the tremendous accuracy achieved by Mosquitos can be
shown by comparing figures for the attacks on the V-weapons sites. The
average tonnage of bombs required to destroy one of these sites by
B-17 Flying Fortresses was 165; for B26 Marauders it was 182 tons and
for B25 Mitchells 219 tons. The average for the Mosquito was just
    under 40 tons! '

    <snip>

Do they mention a similar raid in Oslo ? That one went horribly
wrong. A tram managed to get between the Gestapo building
and the rockets that were fired.
Or do I mix it all up and this was indeed the Copenhagen one?

My books on the subject are in storage at the moment, but I
*think* that could have been the raid on Le Creusot. Or possibly
(I unremember) a Renault factory somewhere on the Loire. ISTR
seeing a photo taken during the raid, with explosions going off
in the factory, and a load of French civilians outside the
    factory running away PDQ.

that could have been the raid on Le Creusot.

Why were they bombing a cookware factory?

  11. It's a place. It's France's equivalent of Sheffield.
It was known as the French Krupps.
The pans are Le Creuset, and although tough, they're not quite up to
    weapons grade hardware.

  14. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Colonel Tupperware
I bet they made some blood good grenades, though.

Perhaps the navigator forgot to get a flying plan before
the trip so he got a few frying pans instead.
