I don't know of a free one. There are paid services, such as
Faxtastic, which'll do it for you.

yer there was a way, you used the number as part of a strange e mail
address. I say WAS though, things might have changed.

about 25 seconds on google reminded me that I have used this before
    http://www.tpc.int/faxbyemail.html

The page was last modified in 1999 so whether it works is another thing.

There was another service that gave you an 0870 number to receive faxes
which came through as TIFFs plus you could email faxes. Can't remember the
name and google doesn't throw up anything familiar.

Plenty of offerings for corporate customers to send faxes via VOIP.

Demon still offer an upgrade (free for their Home Office deal) to add a
n 0870 Fax 'number' compatible with the TPC service so presumably it
    does.

Coo theres a blast from the past - used to use that for one of my hotel
booking sites before hotels could see the benefit of email, and for
another food ordering site where orders were faxed direct into any one
    of a number of kitchens.

Sorry but that server is long gone.

    <shrugs>

Most of them I have seen have got some kind of software controlled modem
functionality. Regarding the smaller ones, I have no idea what
functionality they dropped in favour of their diminutive stature.

As far as technology goes a 56k modem shares many technological genes
with a wheelbarrow. They have both been around since god was a boy.
They're not overly easy to find[1] but if you need one they are damned
    useful.

cheapish solution may be one of these bad boys. Requires no cables yet is
just a modem accepting (I would assume) all standard AT commands and
basically being a telephone. Further investigation is recommended.

[1] Yeah yeah! B&Q and wheelbarrows from PC world.
