A mate, who runs one of these ecsorted
Do they return the bike to the UK if it's rendered unridable and unfixable
    while on t' Continent?

I know, I know. I guess a related question would be - has anyone had
any experience of using the breakdown cover included with a Direct
    Line car insurance policy?

Not I, but in general these sorts of policies simply sub it out to
local breakdown agencies, so quality of service is, err, variable.

that's what I thought - I should read the policy document, I guess.

Yet another question - I've been told it's illegal to use cruise
control on motorways in Belgium - how on earth would they find out?

Also, according to the RAC: "Don't take your speed camera detector to
France. Simply having one in the car, regardless of whether it works
on GPS or radar signals, is an offence."

I have a GPS sat nav that has UK speed camera data - would this count?

They're cunts. They're bound to be cunts, they always are.

OTOH, I had occasion to use Auntie Carole's latest iteration last week
and I was, to be frank, highly impressed. Straight through to a
lovely Irish fella who congratulated me on breaking down in a pub car
park, and who while organising the pickup launched into an
enthusiastic debate on the subject of real ales and bloody bikes.

Five minutes later I had a text message from the recovery agents
giving me a reference number, a direct contact number and an ETA. To
the minute of the ETA (45 minutes/three pints) a truck rolled in and I
was on my way ten minutes later, driven by a delightful Zimbabwean
chap who really ought to let me ghost write his memoirs.

I took mine, it had the french gatso locations loaded into it as well as
the UK ones. There's even a french website you can download them from..

    See:

It's also an offence to cruise along at over 100mph, I did that too.

Nobody burnt lorries by the side of the road, or blocaded any ports, so
I got away with it, and I'd guess so will you.

oh sure, I wasn't intending not taking it just because something
stupid like a law. I won't be in France much anyway - mainly going to
be in Belgium, Germany, Holland and Denmark.
    heh.

I was thinking that very thought as I passed the "No Cruise Control"
warning sign last night but never confuse logic with Belgian thought
    processes.

On a related note, I passed an odd warning sign on the Antwerp ring
last night which appeared to show an exploding car. WTF does that
    mean?

good point - I was in Brussels/Bruges from Friday to Monday last
weekend, and although I had a very enjoyable time, it's clear that
Belgians just don't understand how to use roads *at all*

    most likely.

Direct Line took over Green Flags breakdown service and although only
in the UK they've been fine every time I've called them.

they can't drive, they can't park, they can't design a sensibly laid
out road system, *no-one* appears to know whether or not trams have
any sort of right of way[1], they have no notion of how to operate a
pedestrian crossing (cars drive right through these even if the green
man is showing) etc. etc. etc.

[1] I witnessed with my own eyes a BMW driver apparantly playing
    "chicken" with a *tram*.

Maybe it's a BMW thing. Two or three years ago I witnessed just such
an event here in Basel - the car lost.

TBF I think it was just a blind twat driving, rather than a deliberate
attempt to get across the lines before the tram, despite the two
double-sized red lights she had to drive through, that had been red
for at least ten seconds beforehand.

All credit to the tram driver, mind, who managed to stop it within
just a couple of metres after hitting the car - he must have had less
than a second to start applying the brakes before impact. I was happy
to confrim to the Police later that the BWM driver had indeed gone
straight through the red and that the tram man had done all he
    possibly could.
