It was a fix. They were trying to prove that cars are faster than
public transport. But they started off in the middle of nowhere, and
made Hammond and May walk to their first train station. In reality,
they'd take a taxi (which is, after all, public transport). But
    Clarkson would have lost otherwise.

And of course, if the start had been in Central London, the public
tranport would have been *hours* better.

I've got a Corolla as a loaner while my car is being serviced. And
the cunts didn't bring my car back, so I'm stuck with the Corolla
    until Saturday.

  5. About 5 years ago my neighbour at the time knocked on the door to ask
if we knew the owner of the rather tatty fiesta[1] parked across his
gate blocking him in. I couldn't help and neither could Sussex police
apart from informing him if he and I moved it we could be charged with
criminal damage. We eventually found the owner a girl of about 20
visiting her aunt[2], the aunt didn't want any old cars parked near
the house because it lowered the tone.

[1] I can't actually remember the model but
[2] Who was a right fucking witch

I think I've told the story before about my parent's Jaguar owning
neighbour[1] who many years ago reported me for failing to display tax
in my old beaten to a pulp and black Hammerite painted Datsun 120Y Coupe
[2], when I visited them. Within 10 minutes of him looking at the
windscreen a police car arrived and 2 officers knocked at my parent's
door. I got prosecuted for it despite having a tax disc sitting on the
floor of the car, it had fallen out of the screen.

Once I'd got the tax disc in the window I parked it outside his house
for 3 weeks solid. He went to see my dad after 3 or 4 days about getting
the car moved, but my dad pretty much told him to **** off as the car
was now fully legal and could stay where I liked to park it as long as
it wasn't an obstruction. My old man phoned me and offered me the loan
of his old Marina Estate just so we could keep the Datsun parked there.

When I went to collect the Datsun I spotted the Jaguar parked up on the
road with two bald rear tyres, so I reported that to the police. The
local Police did nothing at all, so I made a formal complaint to the
Chief Constable. Still nothing got done. My old man isn't by any means a
bad neighbour, but he made a point of telling the bloke he was a dodgy
**** who deserved a kicking, and if my old man says something like that
then whoever it was aimed at had better consider it a threat.

[1] One of the local hob-nobs who had fingers in every pie. Masons,
Round Table etc, you name it he was involved with it. He was a local
    councillor too.
[2] I got given it, because it was too bad to sell in the paper. Every
panel was caved in and the rear windows were painted over.

  10. Ah; one of the Self-Righteous.
Its spirit lives on in the ShiteOldCarinaII. Rear windows painted over
    and a home-made ladder rack.

This thing had no metal left where the wings met the bonnet, so strips
of the panel cut from a Range Rover roof [1] were put in place with pop
rivets. The wings then sat a bit out of line as the strips were all
bodged in where they touched, so a 4lb lump hammer was employed to beat
the resultant mess into some semblence of shape, it failed miserably.
Copious amounts of duct tape was employed to cover sharp edges and
disguise the lashed up repair, which was deemed good enough to pass an
MOT. Best of all was the rusty hole in the floor which was repaired
using a 5 litre glue tin lid and silicone sealant. I used that car for
18 months and it never let me down once. I even went as far as to fit an
alarm, electric windows, remote central locking, an electric slide back
    sunroof[2], mega stereo and car-phone[3].

[1] Obtained when a fold-back sunroof was installed into the Rangie
[2] Needed to keep the roof panel from caving in on your head as you
    drove
[3] This was 1987/88, car phones were rare in flash cars, let alone
    piles of shit like mine[4].
[4] It helped that I was workshop manager for a car accessory and mobile
    phone airtime supplier.

  13. True; they had an awesome reputation for just keeping going. Was a real
pity about the bodywork on them; bloke I worked with had one he'd bought
new and in by its 4th birthday it needed serious patching up.
