} Hrm. I am fairly sure there were some mechanical fuel injected ones
} before that, but no names come to mind.

Production or racer? If racer, then there's the BMW RS54.

Must've been a rare one. I was getting into large roadbikes then (my
first being a 1 yo GS1000S). While there were no turboed versions of the
Z1 that I can recall, a mate fitted a turbo to his Z1000 MkII. He also
fitted industrial chain, to save a few bucks on normal bike chain. Both
chain and sprockets were stuffed within 500 km...

Yep, and when she went for her license, she had to ride with a
motorcycle cop following. She forgot how to change gears, so did the
whole ride in second. Try that on a rice-burner! :)

My ZX-6R takes off in 4th, pretty slowly but not too bad. I found
this out while riding 800 km+ days when I forget to change down at the
first set of lights for a couple of hours. Just feed the clutch out
    real slow.

It takes off ok in second, just don't give it too much throttle and
noone would notice anything was wrong. I don't have to change out of
second until I'm doing 160 kph (140 if I want to avoid redline).
    :)
