    Channel 4, 9pm-10pm.

ISTR UKRM 'did' this a few months ago.

This programme includes interviews with the British task force commander
and the Belgrano's captain. Let's see if they agree with the FOAK.

Yup. The Belgrano was running on three cylinders and leaking oil from
some of its seals, but someone would have bought it anyway.

What do you mean agree, Didn't you hear that MCN journos have made the
program based purely on what was said on here.

Sounds like a Job for Speedyspic Engineering Services. Do you think we'd
have got it past the garage and onto the patio?

Dunno. Somehow I think Elly would have intercepted it in time.

Anyway, remember it was a pre-war Yank job. Do you have any, for
    example, 28-and-5/16th-inch spanners?

I've never understood that. She was an enemy warship at sea FFS. I
personally think that she would've been a legitimate target if she'd
been on the other side of the planet!

I would not be exactly happy but would accept as legitimate an attack
on war materiel that could otherwise have been used in the conflict.

Not sure about how I'd react to special service-type attacks on
military targets in the UK itself, though I think that we tried it on
    them.

An enemy warship is a legitimate target wherever it is.[1] Obviously as a
Briton I'd be pissed off at an enemy sinking one of our ships, but I could
    hardly claim it was cheating.

[1] With the possible exception of within someone else's territorial
waters, but even then that's more a case of not pissing off neutrals.

  14. Fundamentally, yes.

Rather in the same way that I still think Gunther Prien's attack on
Scapa was one of history's great naval exploits. All's fair in love and
war, and it being "the other side" doesn't change either my appreciation
of a necessary move made or a remarkable deed done.

I think the detractors' point is that we weren't at war with them. In
fact we weren't even, at that stage, in a state of armed hostility
    against them.

Justifying the sinking by saying that it probably saved loads of "our
lads'" lives is a bit like saying that the Nagasaki bomb saved all
those yankee boys that would have died in a full-blown invasion. Both
may be correct, but both ignore the fact that _even_more_ lives would
have been saved if they'd simply not attacked.
    Riiight.

Aren't most of our casulties normally caused by friendly fire from the
merkins? We don't complain about them so a country we are ar war with has
ever right to try and blow us all to smithereens, its in the game.

    <snip>

    Nice rant, BTW :)
Well technically when the GB went down there was no armed conflict
going on - the argies had taken over the islands and our task force
was on its way, but ISTR that the GB was in fact the first shot fired
    in anger.

  20. A bit like the Vichy French fleet during WWII? The one that
we destroyed while it was sitting at harbour.

Mind you we were at war with Vichy France at the time (given that
they had just allied with Germany).
