Seat covers

The Bandit's seat cover has split at the front, where it rubs on the
tank, so I'd like to get it sorted one way or another.

The options I've thought of so far include:

    1. Buy a new seat: *way* too expensive;

    2. Buy a second-hand seat: cheaper, but no knowing how well it'll last;

    3. Buy a new cover, and fit it myself: anyone done this? How easy is it
to do a decent job? Where's the best place to get it from? Is it a good
excuse to use my air-powered nail gun to do the stapling?

    4. Get it re-covered professionally: how much is this likely to cost? Is
it worth going for something other than the bog-standard vinyl cover?

Any other thoughts, comments, suggestions, ridicule?

  2. 5. get a new seat cover and get Lozzo to fit it.

yep. I need to do that too.

I thought of that, but I'm up here <fx:points> and Lozzo's down there
    <fx:points other direction>

It's not like the Bandit seat is a /particularly/ complicated shape, so
it can't be that difficult. Can it?

They all do that, Sir. They need sorting too, otherwise you get wet
    nuts.

I don't think Adrienne's in particular danger of getting wet nuts, is
she, unless you know something that isn't obvious to the eye.

That is why I addressed that specific comment to Eddie, as shown
    above.

Further, Adie is a geezerburd of the finest type and not only that, is
known to be possessed of bigger balls than a lot of the blokes round
    here.

Bear emerged from their own little world to say
The French company that make Baglux have an extensive range apparently. A
mate with a yellow Firestorm bought one. Looked shite but was comfier than
    the OE.

Well, I know Bagster (a French company, if you didn't realise) do lots
of custom seats, as do many other companies, but I don't really want a
custom seat - I don't want any fancy graphics on it, I don't need it any
lower, and I can't think that I'd want it reshaping, unless it was to
make it more like a sportsbike seat, if that's possible. And any of
    those would cost more money.

Basically, I just want it made like new-ish.

    About what I thought.
Yeah, thought about that, but even if you buy one that's visually
perfect, how can you tell that it's not on its last legs?
Banditmania, as well as doing custom seats, will sell new covers
    separately: http://www.banditmania.co.uk/Seats Recover.htm

This is looking like the preferred option at the moment.
    Staples won't be a problem - I'll just the air-powered nail gun.
    Let's see: http://www.webvert.co.uk/bumwraps/

Not giving much detail away there, are they?
I think I'd just wait until it dried naturally, actually.

    Heh.

    Seriously, Eddie, it's a piss-easy job, assuming that you've got a
decent quality cover. The last bike I did was Jamie's DT50, last year,
and everyone says it looks great.

Actually, I did two DT50 seats, now I think about it, and flogged the
    other one on Fleabay.

And look at it this way - if you cock it up, well, you've only spent
    20-25 quid on a cover.

Can I say "They all do that, sir" or is that in the cliche bin too?
    Oh yes.
This is what I have just done, good old eBay.
I plan to do this with the ripped seat, 10 UKP for a cover. One of the
seats will then be back on eBay (which one depends on diy recovering
results). In the interim I am never without a seat.
BanditMania do this. They will even loan you a seat while yours is
being recovered or you exchange your seat for one of theirs. This about
100 UKP upwards depending on taste.

Take it to a company that re-upholsters car seats and interiors?
Shouldn't be too expensive, and I think you'll find that most places
like that are willing to do bike seats too.

I paid £88 [1] for a new cover to be made and fitted to the Guzzi. It's
alright and made from separate stitched panels but they didn't cover the
foam with some form of waterproof membrane and it soaks up water through
    the stitching.

The other problem is the foam has lost its firmness. It's not an overly
complicated shape on the top and sides but the underside has a cut out to
accommodate the base where it follows the contour of the mudguard.

Does anyone know how easy or otherwise it is to fabricate a new foam bit?

[1] Lozzo thought this a bit strong but he can make his own.
TBH, I didn't exactly think it cheap...

That's what I did for the Guzzi - £88 eighteen months ago.

  19. If you want any sort of seat work done, then RK Leighton in Birmingham
    is the place.

As far as chopping foam goes, I understand it can be done using one of
those electric carving knives and some foam, but.....

Blimey, I only paid £25 for work on my seat last year.
